Towersey

A Modern Brick House With Large Glass Windows

Towersey is a modern interpretation of a rural home and showcases an impressive combination of large glass windows and textured surfaces of a modern brick home. The large expanses of glass at Towersey connect the interiors to the rural landscapes around the modern home whilst ensuring the owners achieve their wish for contemporary living.

This modern brick house uses large windows to stand out as a remarkable example of how contemporary architecture can harmoniously blend with historical context.

Architects, Richard Parr, were inspired by the local farm structures that surround the plot to help create this country home. The modern brick home was situated specifically in this countryside plot to capture the exquisite views over the Chilterns and Oxfordshire hills. Large windows and expanses of glass were imperative to the design to ensure these views were captured from every room.

The brick structures span out from a central glazed link, creating designated living and sleeping zones within the rural home. Within this glazed link structure – and throughout the build – we provided various configurations of slim sliding glass doors. The sliding glass doors had an ultra slim 21mm sightline with floor to ceiling glazing which helped to visually connect the interior and exterior spaces.

Special attention was provided to the interface between the sliding glass doors and the brick walls. Here, the sliding door frames were recessed into the brick structure, ensuring that the aluminium framing was hidden, and a frameless interface was achieved.

Large windows punch through the brick and timber walls at specific locations, highlighting interesting or particular views. These large windows were created using frameless structural glazing, allowing us to achieve the sizes desired as well as the frameless detailing.

All fixing for the structural glass windows were designed in conjunction with the building details to ensure that they could be hidden within the charred timber wall structure.

A muted and natural palette was used throughout the modern building, with a focus on natural and materials native to a typical rural building. The combination of glass, brick and blackened timber were a tribute to the rural structures in the countryside location. A dark grey finished was chosen for any visible framing of the large windows which worked well with this colouration design.

This type of high specification, detailed design is where the work that IQ provides really showcases its worth. From details to the glazing performance, everything came together to create this rural home. As well as large windows of slim sliding glass, more typical glass door and window designs were integrated into the modern brick building. These hinged glass doors and windows allow greater flexibility of movement through the building, creating strategic flows of movement from inside to out.

To ensure that the large glazing design to the modern brick home worked together and as part of the larger building architecture, the same dark grey finish was used throughout. Square edged frames were preferred to all large windows to continue the modern building design of the brick home with unobtrusive ironmongery and handles.
