Frameless Glass Link to a traditional farmhouse

Set within the grounds of the former Laines Farmhouse in a linear village in Down Ampney, this property underwent a modern extension to further extend the living space. Contemporary glazing products were used which juxtaposed the traditional Cotswold stone façade and charm of the existing farmhouse building.

A contemporary glass link was designed and installed by IQ Glass to connect the new extension to the farmhouse. Structural glass links are a sensitive method of adding extensions to heritage buildings as the join between the building and the structural glass is minimalistic offering a visually clear separation between the new and heritage architecture.

The glass link allows outstanding levels of light to flood into both the internal living spaces of the farmhouse as well as the extension. As it travels from ground level up and over the peak of the roof and back down the opposite side of the property, the resulting aesthetic is an indoor-outdoor living environment with seamless views of both the front and rear garden as well as panoramic sky views.

To continue the seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor living spaces, a large 4-pane aluminium bi-folding door was installed next to the glass link providing the homeowners with outstanding access into their rear patio and garden. During the Summer months, the occupants can slide and stack the bi-folding doors to one side to allow fresh Summer air to flow throughout the living spaces.

Internally the architects, Shipton Design, wanted to allow the light to continue to flood the space, therefore frameless glass balustrades were installed to the internal mezzanine. The mezzanine is a quiet retreat for reclining while reading a romantic novel and enjoying scenic views through the rooflights. Glass balustrades follow the stairs down into the light-filled lounge area, which leads onto the glass link and back through to the farmhouse.
