Moor Hall

Gable End Windows in Sutton Colfield

This project features gable end windows in Sutton Colfield as the defining architectural element of a private replacement dwelling on Moor Hall Drive. The rear elevation was conceived as a full‑height glazed gable, contrasting with a more traditionally proportioned frontage while opening the primary living spaces to the garden. IQ Glass worked alongside the architect from early design development through to installation, delivering a coordinated glazing package that integrates sliding doors, hinged doors and frameless balustrades into a single architectural composition.

Design Context and Challenges

The replacement dwelling sits within the Four Oaks area of Sutton Coldfield, where large plots, mature landscaping and established architectural character informed the design approach. While the front elevation adopts a more classical proportion to respect the street context, the rear of the house was conceived as a contemporary glazed façade. The principal challenge was the design and execution of gable end windows that could span the full width and height of the rear elevation for maximum natural light. The glazing needed to provide generous openings, minimal sightlines and precise junction detailing, while accommodating balustrades and guarding requirements at upper levels.

Glazing Solution

Gable End Windows in Sutton Colfield Using Slim Sliding Systems
To address the requirement for uninterrupted views and large openings, slim sliding glass doors were introduced at first floor level within the gable end. These gable end windows in Sutton Colfield allow wide glazed panels to move effortlessly while maintaining extremely slender visible framing. The sliding system forms a continuous glazed plane when closed and opens fully to the balcony when retracted, preserving the clarity of the gable geometry. The minimal profiles ensure the glazing reads as part of the architecture rather than a series of framed openings.

Glazing Solution

Ground Floor Gable End Windows with Hinged Doors and Integrated Balustrades
At ground floor level, the gable end windows in Sutton Colfield were resolved using outward‑opening hinged doors with full‑height sidelights. This configuration provides a strong visual connection between interior living spaces and the garden while offering flexibility for day‑to‑day use. Frameless glass balustrades were integrated at both internal Juliette positions and external edges, fixed within concealed channels. This detailing allows the balustrades to sit quietly within the architecture, maintaining uninterrupted sightlines across the glazed elevation.
The performance of the gable end windows in Sutton Colfield was carefully balanced against the architectural intent of openness and minimalism. The glazing systems were developed to support large spans and precise tolerances, ensuring smooth operation and long‑term durability. By coordinating the glazing, balustrades and door systems as a single architectural package, IQ Glass supported the delivery of a refined rear elevation that contrasts with the traditional frontage while remaining controlled and proportionate within its setting.
