Glazed extension to Period Farmhouse with slim sliding glass doors

Illidge Green Farm is an impressive five bedroom period farmhouse on almost four acres of land in Cheshire. Julie Gerrard Architectural Design was commissioned to open out the the kitchen dining space with a large glazed extension to this period farmhouse with seamless transitions to the outside via ultra slim sliding glass doors and an oversized fixed structural glass rooflight.

A three track ultra slim sliding glass door configuration to the rear elevation with one fixed panel and two sliding panes opens out to the patio dissolving the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors while the left side has three floor to ceiling fixed panes which are silicone bonded onto the timber structure leaving a minimal and flawless finish. 

The ultra slim sliding glass doors to this period farmhouse glazed extension has a visible frame profile of only 21m with each oversized pane of glass weighing 125kg each. 

Clever detail lies within the design of the fixed structural glass rooflight which measures over 3m in length and over 1.5m wide. The structural fixed glass rooflight uses Invisio structural glass in the vertical elevations creating a lightwell through the slot glazed design allowing the centre of the raised structural roof to house the drop lighting immediately over the dining room table. 

The structural glass rooflight to this glazed extension period farmhouse is intentionally design to maximise natural light to the most used social point within the new space, as well as provide a focal point from inside the glazed extension while the ultra slim sliding glass doors frame views, and provide ventilation when required.

Key to the client’s brief was enhanced ‘indoor outdoor living’ to reflect the traditional agricultural land in which the Glass extension to this period farmhouse sits.  

The result is an airy and spacious light-filled kitchen dining space service as the heart of this Period farmhouse.
