Gladys Road Camden

Slim Patio Doors to Camden Terrace Renovation

Gladys Road is a traditional Victorian terrace in the heart of Camden, transformed through a carefully considered renovation and lowergroundfloor extension that sought to bring light deeper into the home and create a stronger connection to the private rear garden

IQ Glass was appointed to design, manufacture and install the specialist glazing package for this project, collaborating with developer and project manager Lisa Ryde Properties. The brief was centred around transparency, minimalism and improved spatial flow, with a particular emphasis on creating a seamless visual link between the reconfigured lowergroundfloor living spaces and the garden.

Architectural Context and Project Vision

The property, located on Gladys Road, forms part of a late19thcentury residential street characterised by stockbrick façades, stuccoed ground floors and tall sash windows — features typical of the Victorian expansion of West Hampstead and Camden.

The renovation aimed to refine and modernise the substantial Victorian home which had retained much of its traditional layout. With living spaces positioned deep within the plan and no side access to introduce lateral daylight, the success of the extension depended on using highperformance glazing to draw natural light in from above and across the rear elevation.

The developer and owner sought a contemporary architectural language that respected the heritage of the house while delivering a lightfilled, understated interior. The new lowergroundfloor extension created the opportunity to redesign the relationship between interior spaces and the long, private rear garden — one of the most desirable attributes of large Victorian terraces in this part of Camden.

Slim Patio Doors in Camden Help Transform the Garden Connection

At the heart of the extension is a threepanel, threetrack minimalframe sliding door system provided by IQ Glass, that spans the entire 4.5metre structural opening. These slim patio doors in Camden are designed with an exceptionally slender 21mm sightline, ensuring that the new living space feels visually open even when the doors are closed.

The flush, stepfree threshold creates a smooth transition from the internal floor level to the small rear garden, eliminating barriers and reinforcing the indooroutdoor continuity. The anodised silver finish gives the system a refined architectural presence, complementing both the contemporary extension and the original Victorian brickwork.

To support ventilation requirements without compromising aesthetics, IQ Glass incorporated a concealed slot drain and a discreet slot aeration detail, avoiding the need for visible trickle vents while still ensuring compliance and high environmental performance. All glass within the system is structurally bonded, lowE coated and argon filled, achieving excellent thermal efficiency.

Brining Natural Light in From Above

Because the house is terraced, there were no opportunities for side windows. To counter this limitation, IQ Glass installed a large structural glass rooflight above the new extension. This five metre long rooflight runs perpendicular to the main living space, pulling daylight deep into the interior and maintaining a clear visual rhythm across the architectural composition.

Its stepped, backpainted perimeter conceals fixings and structure, resulting in a clean, uninterrupted aperture that feels intrinsic to the new design. This rooflight plays a crucial role in ensuring the lowergroundfloor rooms remain bright and visually expansive throughout the day.

The renovation extended beyond the lower floors. At roof level, the topfloor terrace was enhanced with frameless structural glass balustrades. These create an open perimeter that preserves outward views while allowing daylight to fall naturally onto the terrace. On one boundary, a translucent finish provides privacy from neighbouring properties without disrupting the minimal aesthetic.

The balustrades reinforce the architectural language established across the project — a focus on clarity, clean lines and a sense of lightness throughout all levels of the home.

A Renovation that Boosts House Prices

The property has undergone several phases of improvement over the last decade, reflecting both rising expectations for highend Camden homes and the premium attached to larger freehold Victorian houses in NW6. Significant value was added following the early renovation works completed around 2013–14, and by the time the property sold again in 2021 for £2.515m, it was regarded as one of the more substantial and desirable family houses on the street.

This case study demonstrates how carefully specified glazing — particularly slim patio doors, rooflights and frameless balustrades — can unlock the architectural potential of traditional terraced properties and materially influence longterm property value.

Technical Details — Glazing Installed by IQ Glass

Slim Sliding Door System

  • The sliding door was located on the lower ground floor extension. Its configuration was a threepanel, threetrack sliding system.
  • The sliding door measured 4500mm wide × 2400mm tall.
  • The framing used was fully thermally broken aluminium characterised by 21mm sightlines, a flush, stepfree threshold and floor to ceiling glass finishes.
  • The aluminium framed were finished in an anodised silver finish
  • All glass was double glazed with a low e coating and an argon gas filling. The glass was structurally bonded into the frame which allows for slimmer sightlines and much higher air tightness.
  • The system was installed with an integrated slot drain and slot aeration for ventilation.

Structural Glass Rooflight

  • The structural glass rooflight was located within the roof of the lower ground floor extension, measuring 5000mm × 800mm overall.
  • The glass specification was doubleglazed with lowE coating and argon filling.
  • The outer edge of the rooflight was stepped with a backpainted perimeter finish to hide all the structural glass fixing and create a frameless finish to the rooflight both inside and out.

Roof Terrace Balustrades

  • On the upper floor roof terrace IQ Glass installed a 950mm high toughenedlaminate glass balustrade.
  • The balustrade ran the entire way around the roof terrace, measuring 15 linear metres in total
  • The glass was fixed to the existing structure using a frameless clamping base system.
  • Most of the glass was clear with one elevation of the balustrade finished in a frosted design to provide privacy to the terrace from neighbouring properties.

: Relevance for Architects and Homeowners in Camden

For architects and homeowners upgrading Victorian properties in Camden, this project exemplifies how minimal frame sliding doors can meaningfully transform lower ground floor living areas, particularly where natural light and connection to the garden are key design drivers.

The Gladys Road renovation demonstrates how minimal frame glazing systems can elevate the design quality of period properties without compromising their historic appeal. For architects, it serves as a reference for integrating slim patio doors, structural roof glazing and frameless terrace balustrades into tight urban plots. For homeowners, it highlights the lifestyle and property value benefits of a well executed glazing strategy in premium London postcodes.
