Slim framed sliding doors create indoor outdoor living space.

This three storey detached home in Greater London undertook a full refurbishment, to extend and rethink the internal living spaces. The Victorian home had a character that the homeowners wanted to preserve, whilst utilising the space better and redesigning the interior design to make it a calm, serene atmosphere.

As part of the contemporary rear extension minimally framed sliding glass doors were specified, allowing the homeowners to enjoy their manicured garden from within the home. With ultra-slim sightlines from just 21mm and a flush threshold certified for barrier-free access, the three-pane sliding doors make for seamless travel between the indoor and outdoor environments.

The aluminium sliding profiles were finished with a polyester powder coated in black for a modern industrial finish and to match the new steel internal glass door frames. To bring a modern touch and allow as much natural light into the home as possible, oversized sliding doors were a perfect choice. In a three pane configuration, clear views of the outside are possible when looking out from the middle.

For a softer edge and to add some privacy, minimal curtain systems in a neutral colour palette have been chosen to accompany the glass sliders. Frameless rooflights were specified within the new extension space, allowing even more natural light to flow freely into the home and enhancing the interior design. Natural light plays a huge part in creating a calm living space and the use of slim framed and frameless systems made this possible.

Inside the open plan kitchen and dining space, steel-framed internal glass doors were chosen to match the surrounding interior design, which was neutral with an artisan finish. The tall steel doors had slim, subtle handles which allowed the glass to remain the primary feature. The steel-framed internal doors allow the rest of the ground floor to benefit from the huge influx of natural light gained from the extension, in a way that traditional wooden doors would not provide.

The family home is now a soft, peaceful environment that is bathed in natural light throughout the day and benefits from clear sky views at night. The use of oversized glazing configurations has opened up the interior design and now follows an indoor-outdoor style of living.
