Electro Chromic tinting glass

Tinting Glass

Electrochromic Glass is an extremely advanced technical, electrical glass solution suitable for use on a wide range of glass elevations to provide automated solar shading from within the glass unit itself

Controlled via electrical power, the coating within an Electrochromic Glass unit changes the appearance and performance of the glass units when power is applied. The resulting tinting glass creates the perfect solution for solar shading to highly glazed spaces. As the colour of the glass units slowly changes from transparent to dark the light transmission and G factor (measure of solar shading) changes also to provide a full light and solar shading solution from within the glass unit itself, negating the need for curtains and blinds.

Solar Shading

The technology works by ionising the particles within the conductive coating. When electricity is applied the metal ions within the coatings are all attracted to one face of the coating, building up there and providing a solar shading solution within the double or triple glazed unit.

This electrical glass solution is a perfect choice for frameless glass roofs or double height glass elevations where traditional curtains or blinds would not be possible for solar shading. Each double or triple glazed unit has a maximum size of around 3m x 1.5m

The light transmission of an Electrochromic Glass Unit will fade down to a minimum of 1%, with the G factor reducing to 5% for a full solar shading solution from a glass elevation.

A section of the frameless glass roof at the Courtyard Showroom has been replaced with this electrical Tinting Glass. Contact us to arrange a visit to see this advanced electrical glass solution in action.

At the Showroom

With dynamic glazing solutions such as electrochromic glass, it can be difficult to picture how the glazing will look in real life. Luckily the IQ Glass showroom has electrochromic glass incorporated into a structural glass roof, allowing visitors to see the difference in views and light transmission in person.

At just the click of a button, the seemingly ordinary structural glass roof will begin to change colour, helping to reduce solar glare and solar gain.

This is just one example of many technical and dynamic glazing solutions on show at the IQ Glass showroom, other solutions such as heated glass and switchable privacy glass can also be seen.

An added benefit of coming to see IQ's glazing solutions in person is being able to ask a technical sales advisor any questions that pop into your head when walking around and viewing the systems.

Typical Glass Composition

Electro Chromic Glass reduces glare and overheating in highly glazed spaces by reducing the G factor and light transition of glass on demand.

The actual performance received from each electro chromic glass unit will depend on the specification of glass required for your installation however for a typical glass composition of 6mm TXD outer, 16mm argon filled cavity, 6mm TXD inner with low e coating you can expect the below performance

Light Transmission 55% - 1%

External Reflection 10% - 5%

Internal Reflection 9% - 7%

G Factor 0.39 – 0.05

Glass Sizes

Minimum size 457mm x 457mm

Maximum size 1524mm x 3028mm

Double or Triple Glazed units only, glass cannot be curved, cut or drilled

Minimum Unit Thickness 20mm

With the vast sizes available, electrochromic glass can work effectively in small residential glass roofs and across large elevations of commercial offices. The flexibility with glass sizes allows the same with design, creating amazing design aesthetics to commercial buildings or acting as an alternative to mainstream solar shading methods, such as blinds.

Electrical Power

Typical power supply 100-240VAC 50/60Hrz

Power per unit area in W/m2, Peak: 2.5 Watts, Average: 0.4 Watts

For this technical glazing solution to solar shading, the actual power supply required to transform the state of the glass from clear to tinted is low, 200m² uses the same power output as a 60-watt light bulb.

The electro chromic glazing only uses this power supply to transition, once the state of glass has changed the power supply is cut off.

Electro Chromic Glass

Electro Chromic Glass for Commercial Projects

Electrochromic Glazing is useful in commercial projects where large elevations of glass are used to the buildings facades. The eco-friendly design helps to reduce the solar gain dramatically reducing internal cooling costs to large buildings. The low electrical usage of Electro Chromic Glass enables an assessment for the world’s leading sustainability method for commercial projects, BREEAM. The energy efficient system works effectively in both heating and cooling of the building using only a small amount of energy to transform the current state of the glass.

With the focus on sustainable value and efficiency, BREEAM certified developments attractive property investments and generates sustainable environments that enhance the well-being of the people who live and work in them.

Hotel Reception

A brand new renovation of a neglected hotel has created a space perfect for all year round. Using Electrochromic Glass, the lobby can now shade the space from the sun, reducing the glare through the glazed roof. When the technical glazing solution is in its transparent state it maximises the natural light in the space.

Electrochromic Glass is the perfect solar shading solution for a large elevation of glazing where traditional blinds cannot be used.
