What a Difference a Glass Makes

Written by Rebecca Clayton

How to Improve Natural Light in Narrow Properties

About 50% of the projects IQ Glass work on are renovation projects this include glass extensions, internal refurbishments and changes to existing buildings. The aim of these projects is to improve the appearance of the building, the internal layout and the quality of living for the occupants. On residential style projects these renovations are normally used to create open plan living spaces inside which are popular at the moment, an extension can be used to increase the useable living space as well as open up smaller spaces. Incorporating large areas of frameless or minimally framed glass is used on projects wanting to create an indoor-outdoor effect to their living spaces. There is no doubt that the end results of these projects can be stunning but what difference has IQ Glass made? The below two projects show what a difference architectural glass can make to a building or space.

Ansty Manor

IQGlass_ArchitecturalGlass_BeforeandAfterThis traditional home in Salisbury had an original extension in place, same design and materials as the original home with small timber windows. Here the traditional stone addition was knocked down and replaced with a highly glazed extension space. Sliding doors line two sides in floor to ceiling glazing with a flush floor track cross the IQGlass_ArchitecturalGlass_BeforeandAfterinternal and external finishes.

In the roof a frameless fixed rooflight allows maximum light into the space and a frameless glass link connects the new and the old seamlessly.

Here the addition of architectural glass to this home has created a large, open sun room that can be used at all times of year. The flush tracks create a free flow from the internal space to the large patio area and sprawling lawns that surround the space essentially extending into the garden when the weather is fine.

What a difference glass made.

 White Lodge

IQGlass_ArchitecturalGlass_BeforeandAfter03 This s bungalow in Oxted Surrey was small and cramped with small bedrooms and only one small living room. It was completely knocked down and replaced with a highly contemporary home with large areas of frameless and  minimally framed glazing.

The design incorporated a IQGlass_ArchitecturalGlass_BeforeandAfter04cantilevered first floor, a wall of frameless structural glazing, sliding glass doors to the balconies and ground floor garden, glass balustrades and a bespoke oriel style window box.

What a difference glass made.
