Invisio+: A Lower-Carbon Approach to Structural Glazing

Invisio+ is the next evolution of IQ Glass’ award-winning Invisio structural glazing fixing system, developed to deliver enhanced thermal performance while retaining the fully frameless appearance associated with the Invisio range.

Designed and engineered in-house, its thermally broken fixing profile accommodates deeper glass units, enabling triple glazing and other advanced glass configurations to be incorporated into large-format structural glazing.

When tested with a triple-glazed unit with a Ug value of 0.7 W/m²K, the complete Invisio+ assembly achieved a verified Uw value of 0.5895 W/m²K. The test assembly measured 3m wide by 6m high, demonstrating the system’s performance at an architectural scale.

The system has also been developed with embodied carbon in mind. Invisio+ profiles are manufactured from 100% post-consumer recycled aluminium, with an embodied carbon value of 0.89 kgCO2/kg. When combined with an appropriately selected low-carbon glass substrate, this allows both the operational and embodied carbon implications of the structural glazing specification to be considered.

Sustainable Glazing in Practice

‘Sustainability’ has become a familiar term in architecture, but IQ Glass has been developing high-performance glazing solutions for sustainable buildings for many years. When designed and specified correctly, glass can form an integral part of a low-energy building envelope; balancing thermal efficiency, solar control, natural light and occupant comfort.

The following projects demonstrate how specialist glazing design and advanced glass technologies can respond to demanding environmental targets, including Passive House performance.

Hellidon Passive House

Hellidon Passive House demonstrates how large-format glazing can be incorporated into a highly efficient building envelope without compromising the architectural connection to the landscape. IQ Glass designed and installed four sets of triple-glazed sliding doors, including a principal courtyard elevation measuring approximately 21m wide by 2.7m high.

Specified with low-emissivity glass and thermally broken aluminium framing, the main sliding system achieved a Uw value of approximately 0.76 W/m²K, while the additional doors achieved approximately 0.95 W/m²K. The glazing works with the building’s orientation and external shading strategy to balance daylight, winter solar gain and protection against summer overheating.

Claywood House

Claywood House is a five-bedroom low-carbon home combining a bespoke glazing package with a ground-source heat pump, 12kW photovoltaic array and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. IQ Glass worked alongside the architects to specify glazing that supported thermal performance, natural light, solar management and inclusive access.

The package included triple-glazed minimal windows® 4+ sliding doors, structural glazing, frameless-effect roof glazing and floor-to-ceiling picture windows. Solar-control glass helps manage heat gain, while heated glass reduces condensation around the indoor physiotherapy pool. Motorised doors and flush thresholds also provide accessible connections between the interior and garden, demonstrating how sustainable glazing can contribute to both environmental performance and occupant wellbeing.
