Glass Extension Adds Space and Light to Musician's London Home 

Boy George's house in Hampstead has just been listed for sale, featuring a large glass extension and glass link to the kitchen and rear of the property by IQ Glass. The gothic mansion overlooking Hampstead Heath was originally built in 1868 but has recently undergone an extensive renovation including a new kitchen extension with architectural glazing to connect the space to the outdoors.

The Kitchen Glass Extension

The renovation - designed by F3 Architects - modernised the historical Victorian property, adding greater connections between rooms and from the house to the outside. The glass kitchen extension utilises floor to ceiling glass doors from IQ, with a flush threshold to the base and slim profiles throughout. The resulting glass extension provides the kitchen with a mass of natural light as well as enhanced connections to the landscaped garden.

The corner of the glass extension is a frameless glass connection, with the fixed glass wall meeting the elevation of sliding glass doors with no frame. The solid roof of the glass extension is designed in a way to minimise the appearance of the roof structure on the glass elevations. This allows the glass walls of the extension to reach up above the typical ceiling finish. The result is a glass wall that disappears into the ceiling from the internal view and a glass elevation with minimal structure from an external view.

The Glass Link to the Extension

Access to the new glass kitchen extension is found through the frameless glass link created with bespoke structural glazing. The glass link creates an 'up and over' glass design, connecting to the existing brick wall that forms the boundary of the building. The glass walkway leads from the reception room to the kitchen and ensures that the light to the kitchen and existing reception room is not interrupted, making this hallway feel as if it is an external part of the garden.

The glass is fully insulated, using double glazed units with low e coatings and thermally broken metal connections. This creates a fully insulated glass walkway that is a full part of the house and forms the external envelope of the building. The glass link connects sensitively to the existing Victorian building with a bespoke combination of channels and angles to form an insulated, weather tight barrier.
