Homebuilding & Renovating recently wrote a feature surrounding glass extensions and how to incorporate a glass extension to suit any style of home, from traditional to contemporary. IQ Glass use frameless structural glazing to create minimal glass extensions, ranging from frameless glass links to entire glass box extensions.
The article explored a number of glass extension options from previous IQ projects, including Princelet Street which has a rustic style glass extension that used slim framed pivot doors in a double opening configuration, alongside a pitched glass roof structure that had steel supporting sections in the same colour as the aluminium profiles of the pivot door systems.
Some of our listed building projects were also featured, such as Yew Tree House and Chestnut Cottage, providing examples of using glass to extend historic or listed buildings whilst maintaining the original character of the dwelling. In both of these projects, structural glazing was used in conjunction with a structural glass roof, allowing floods of natural light into the space below.
Yew Tree House and Princelet Street have both been designed around exposed brick walls within the glass extensions, retaining some rustic charm. When designing the glass box extension at Princelet Street, IQ incorporated brick slips to fix the glass roof to the external building structure, giving the illusion of original brickwork inside the glass box.
