Hawthorns featured in "Extensions: traditional or contemporary" within the March edition of Build It to showcase how contemporary extensions designed utilising a vast amount of glass can feel more like "part of the garden than the house".

This article provides a host of top tips for gaining planning consent for contemporary additions to properties including information about listed buildings. The style of the extension greatly affects whether the planning consent for an extension is agreed. The article talks about how extensions to listed buildings work best when designed using structural glass as the new and existing areas of the property can be clearly defined. The top tips to secure planning consent include: get the council involved at an early stage of the project (ideally at sketch stage) so they can make you aware of any likely objections early on, if the property has a high heritage value then the local conservation officer should be included within the property at an early stage as they will have a big impact on the final decision, ensure the designers are of a high standard and can create highly detailed illustrations of the proposal for both you and the planners to clearly visualise.

The Hawthorns is a contemporary design that creates a clear separation between the existing building and the new glass box. The glass box extension not only increases the internal living space but also increases the amount of natural light within the property.
