Design Context & Challenges
The existing Victorian home sits on an elevated position above Ilkley, exposed to strong weather conditions from the moor. The architectural aim was to modernise the property by creating a new open‑plan living space that connects directly to the garden, while retaining the form and character of the original house.
To achieve this, Townscape Architects introduced a contemporary rear extension with large-format glazing and slim sliding doors. Integrating this level of minimal glazing into an older stone building presented several technical challenges:
-
The rear extension required large glass spans with minimal sightlines to preserve clean, modern lines.
-
The exposed hillside location meant increased wind load, requiring strengthened glass specification.
-
Threshold levels and floor buildup had to be coordinated to create a flush internal–external connection.
-
The junction between modern glazing and traditional stonework demanded bespoke detailing to maintain airtightness and avoid cold bridging.
IQ Solutions Provided
Invisio® fixed structural glazing stitches the elevations and lifts daylight deeper into the plan. Continuous clerestory bands wrap key façades to create an even wash of top light, while full-height picture windows are placed to frame views and balance solid and void. The result is a disciplined, minimal façade language that modernises the property without overwhelming its character. External terraces are protected with frameless effect glass balustrades set in a base channel for a clean top line and uninterrupted views across the landscaped gardens
How IQ Overcame the Project Constraints
- Designed glazing capable of withstanding higher wind loads typical of moorland exposure
- Engineered junction details to prevent water ingress where the extension meets the original façade
- Worked with contractor to sequence installation on a sloped, constrained site
- Provided technical guidance on insulation, drainage, and threshold compliance
