Glass Rear Extension in Tavistock

Tavistock designed and installed by IQ Glass is a contemporary glass rear extension to a Grade II listed home. The project focusses on maximising natural light, improving spatial flow and creating a seamless connection between the interior and the garden.

The design of the glazed extension required a balance of high performance glass and minimal detailing, allowing the homeowners to enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape while maximising natural light throughout the interior.

A key feature of the glass rear extension in Tavistock, is the installation of the slim framed sliding  glass doorsdesigned to open the living areas directly onto the garden, and the Structural glass walls which transform into a modern glass extension.

Planning Constraints & Heritage Considerations

Due to the sloping site, the exposed location and the properties proximity to the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the architects design for the glass rear extension had to showcase high quality materials and high levels of architectural merit to gain planning permissions. Structural tolerances, drainage detailing, and frame concealment were all refined collaboratively. Through this process, IQ Glass achieved a finish that appears effortless.

We worked closely with Le Page architects to integrate the sliding doors and structural glass walls, to transform a traditional home into a bright, open, and highly connected living space and above all else functional.

IQ supplied and installed precision engineered structural glass elements that were the central focus point of the glass rear extension in Tavistock. These components were tailored to the property’s dimensions, ensuring minimal sightlines and a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces.

IQ integrated slim frame sliding glass doors in RAL 7016 offering expansive views and effortless operation. Their ultra slim sightlines were chosen to preserve uninterrupted views across the countryside which look over the boarder of Tamar valley while allowing the clients to enjoy a bright, contemporary living environment. When opened, the large sliding panels create a wide, fluid threshold that enhances the indoor outdoor flow perfect for family living and entertaining. When closed, the high performance glazing ensures excellent thermal efficiency without compromising the minimalist aesthetic.

Although the main focus of the project being the beautiful grand slim sliding doors, the contemporary rear glass extension incorporates beautifully detailed structural glass walls, that enhance the extension with uninterrupted transparency.

These frameless glass elevations were positioned to the side of the new extension, forming a clear, minimal junction between the slim sliding doors on the rear and the solid elements of the existing property. High performance double glazing with a Low iron and a solar control coating was applied for superior transparency ,that achieves a bright naturally lit interior that remains conformable throughout the year.

Technical Details

  • The integrated sliding door is a thermally broken aluminium system with bonded glass and a 21mm frame
  • The sliding door frame was RAL 7016
  • All glazing is double glazed with solar control and Low e coatings
  • The sliding door was designed with a two track bi-parting configuration with a 21mm central meeting style
  • The fixed returning glass wall was made using structural glass

The Tavistock project stands as an excellent example of how a contemporary glass extension can be sensitively added to a listed building without compromising its historic character. By utilising minimal frame glazing, structural glass walls, and high‑performance double glazing, the design introduces modern functionality while maintaining a clear visual distinction between old and new.

This project demonstrates how carefully detailed glazing solutions can enhance a listed structure, delivering modern comfort and aesthetics while respecting the historic context.
