Despite the elegance of the finished result of these glass doors in Scotland extension, the installation process presented significant logistical and environmental challenges. Due to the property’s location and restricted access, crane lifting was not an option. Each glass unit had to be carefully carried by hand through the front door and through the property to the rear.
The weight of the panels demanded a coordinated team of 8 to 10 operatives for safe handling and positioning. In addition, Scotland’s famously unpredictable coastal weather brought frequent rain, forcing work to pause and restart multiple times during installation. Nonetheless, through meticulous planning and on-site collaboration, the glazing was installed safely, and the project was completed on time.
To achieve uninterrupted views and seamless indoor-outdoor living, the design team specified IQ Glass’s ultra slim sliding doors, an advanced system that’s become a benchmark in glass doors in Scotland extension and across the UK. The installation spans more than 4.5 metres, using double-glazed panels weighing approximately 236kg each. The doors feature internal and external toughened glass, with a durable marine-grade finish to withstand the site’s coastal exposure. Each unit is engineered to a wind load of 0.65 kN/m², ensuring long-term structural performance without compromising on visual elegance. Custom handles were colour-matched to the frame for a clean, integrated aesthetic.
Above the spa and terrace area, the newly constructed roof was fitted with Invisio structural roof glazing, allowing natural light to cascade deep into the space below. Engineered with a discreet 5° fall to promote drainage, the roof glazing panels weigh around 172kg and also utilise internal and external toughened glass with a marine-grade finish. Like the sliding doors, the roof glazing is rated to the same wind load specification, offering a unified performance profile across the entire glazed envelope.
