Clarkes Way

Glass Extension in Daventry for a Contemporary House Renovation

Clarkes Way is a carefully detailed glass extension in Daventry, designed as part of the transformation of a detached house. Created to form a light, open kitchen, breakfast and dining space, the new rear addition replaces a more traditional extension with a contemporary glazed volume that strengthens the connection between the house and garden. IQ Glass delivered the architectural glazing package for the project, including slim sliding doors, structural glass walls and a structural glass roof.

Creating a Light Filled Rear Extension with Strong Garden Connections

The design intent was to reimagine the rear of the home as a more open and visually connected living environment. The extension was conceived as a transparent architectural addition, using large areas of glazing to bring daylight deep into the plan and to create a stronger relationship with the landscaped garden beyond. For architects and homeowners considering a glass extension in Daventry, this project shows how glazing can be used to redefine everyday living spaces without overwhelming the character of the existing house.

Overcoming the Limitations of a Conventional Rear Extension

A central challenge in the project was moving away from a more enclosed, traditional extension arrangement and replacing it with a rear addition that felt open, bright and contemporary. The new kitchen, breakfast and dining spaces needed to work as a single connected volume while still offering comfort, usability and a strong sense of enclosure. This required extensive glazing without losing the clarity of the architectural composition.

Responding to Site Conditions, Daylight and Wide Structural Openings

The design also had to respond to the steep garden slope and mature landscape, both of which shaped how the extension related to the outside space. Large openings were essential to capture views and provide direct access to the garden, but these needed to be achieved with minimal visual interruption and with suitable thermal and solar performance. The result demanded glazing systems capable of spanning significant widths while maintaining a refined, low-profile appearance.

Slim Sliding Doors and Structural Glazing for a Transparent Rear Addition

IQ Glass supplied a slim sliding door system across the main garden facing elevation, creating expansive openings with minimal framing and slim sightlines. The principal three track installation extends to almost 15 metres wide and 2600mm high, combining sliding and fixed panes to maximise the glazed area while allowing generous access to the exterior. Additional sliding and fixed glazed elements were integrated elsewhere in the elevation to complete the overall facade.

To reinforce the sense of openness, IQ Glass also designed and installed an Invisio® structural glass roof together with structural glazed vertical elements below. The roof spans approximately 14,400mm in width and is formed from four silicone jointed panes supported by low iron glass fins, allowing daylight to enter from above without the visual weight of conventional framing. A corresponding band of structural glazing beneath creates a continuous glazed relationship between the vertical and overhead elements.

Together, these glazing elements allowed the kitchen and dining spaces to open broadly onto the garden while preserving a calm and coherent architectural language. Solar glass was specified to the structural roof and glazed wall elements to help manage heat gain, ensuring that the extension delivered both visual transparency and practical performance. For a glass extension in Daventry, this combination of sliding doors and structural glazing demonstrates how large scale openings, overhead daylight and refined detailing can be resolved within a single design.
