Andover Road

A Contemporary Glass Extension in Winchester for a Reimagined 1930s Home

Located on Andover Road in Winchester, this 1930s property underwent a complete architectural transformation led by OB Architecture. The brief was to create a contemporary living, kitchen and dining space that opened fully to the extensive rear garden while reorganising the interior layout for modern family life. IQ Glass was appointed as the specialist glazing subcontractor, designing and installing the structural glazing that forms the defining feature of this glass extension in Winchester.

The result is a crisp, frameless extension that stitches together the original home and the landscaped garden through a precise arrangement of structural glass, integrated aluminium doors and a stepped roof design that floods the interior with natural light.

Reworking a Deep Plan and Uneven Geometry

The existing house suffered from a compartmentalised internal layout that limited visibility and restricted daylight penetration. The client asked for a space that brought the kitchen, dining and family room into a single flowing environment, while introducing more balanced light across the depth of the property. The garden layout also needed to be integrated more successfully, with the old rear elevation offering little connection to the outdoor areas.

The extension presented unique geometric challenges. The architects envisioned a glass structure that would appear as if it was carefully slotted between irregular roof projections, with staggered partial height walls stepping across the façade. This meant every glass panel had to be designed to align precisely with the internal L shaped steel frame specified by OB Architecture. The glazing also needed to incorporate ventilation and garden access without undermining the purity of the glass form.

A Structural Glass Form Built Around Architectural Irregularity

IQ Glass engineered and installed an 8.4m wide structural glass extension built entirely from double glazed structural glass walls and roof panels. The glazing follows the architectural stepping of the façade, with glass heights changing across the elevation to respond to the partial height roof wall that runs horizontally and wraps around the sides of the extension. The unique alignment of the glass panels with the internal L shaped steel structure required millimetre accuracy during design and installation.

The glass roof projects beyond the elevation to create a 0.2m glass canopy. In addition to the main 1.1m deep roof structure, two elongated roof elements extend 3m back into the extension, delivering deeper daylight penetration and creating a visually distinctive ceiling profile. These extended roof strips draw natural light far into the kitchen and dining area, supporting the architect’s vision of a bright, open plan environment.

Integrated Aluminium Doors and Ventilation

Within the glass façade, IQ Glass installed a thermally broken aluminium window for ventilation and a set of double opening casement doors that provide direct access to the garden. The doors, spanning 2m between steel posts, allow the homeowner to transition directly from the dining area to the extensive garden and pool beyond. The integrated window, at 0.6m wide, offers controlled ventilation without disrupting the clean lines of the structural glazing.

Both the window and the doors were finished in a black powder coated frame to match the aesthetic of the slim structural joints within the glass extension. Their placement was coordinated precisely with the stepped geometry of the façade to ensure a cohesive architectural expression.

A Light Filled Extension Enhancing Property Value

The extension forms part of a wider redevelopment that includes new timber trusses, reconfigured circulation routes and a redesigned garden with a pool, pergola and landscaped planting. The extensive use of structural glass and large rooflights transforms the internal environment, creating the bright family spaces desired by the clients.

Such contemporary extensions typically yield significant uplift in long term property value in the Winchester and wider Newbury catchment. High specification glazing, particularly when expressed so cleanly, has a strong market presence among UHNW buyers seeking modern living within established residential areas.

Technical Snippet

  • Structural glass extension measuring 8.4m wide and 1.1m deep, constructed from double glazed structural glass walls and roof panels.
