One of our internal experts writes the first draft

The first draft is written by someone who works with that glazing system. This might be a technical advisor, a designer, or a product expert.

They write using three things, in this order. First, our own finished projects and what we learned from them. Second, the building rules and the glass standards that apply. Third, the maker's technical data for the system we supply. When we give a number or a limit, we say where it comes from. We name the rule or standard and link to the official source so you can check it yourself.

A second expert checks it

Before any article goes live, a second qualified person reads it. They check three things. That the facts are right and not made too simple. That any rule or standard we mention is current and stated correctly. That the advice matches how the work is really done on site.

This checker can send the article back, ask for proof, or stop it from going live. Two experts must agree. This is the most important safety step in how we work. The name of the person who checked each article is shown on the article itself.

Each article shows who wrote it, who checked it, and the date it was last checked. Rules, standards, and products change over time. So we go back and review our advice on a regular basis. We update it when a rule changes, a standard is replaced, or a product changes. Being right matters more than leaving an old article alone.

Unprecedented Clarity

Low Iron Glass is a specialist glazing solution offering unprecedented levels of clarity and transparency in large glass items.

When the glass is produced it is laced with a natural impurity of iron oxide. In thicker glass units, such as laminated or structural glass elements, this impurity produces a noticeable 'greening' tint to the glass. In projects and items where transparency and purity of colours are desired Low Iron Glass is always recommended.

This glass is made using iron free silica and other materials with naturally low iron contents. The melting process is tightly controlled to ensure that the product properties remain consistent resulting in a glass panel where the iron content of the glass is greatly reduced (hence the name – Low Iron Glass).

From an internal perspective, Low Iron Glass can achieve light transmission values of up to 91% making it the clearest building material available.

Glazing Consistency

Controlling solar gain in a high glazed environment is possible with the use of Solar Control coatings. These coatings reduce the amount of solar radiation that can enter a space through the glazing and thus reducing the amount of solar gain. Low Iron Glass units can be substituted into every glass application including framing systems and is especially effective where you have different glass systems abutting one another.

A structural glass wall will have a different glass thickness and makeup to that of the glazing panel in a minimal windows sliding door. If you want these two items next to each other, perhaps with the minimal windows leaf sliding behind the structural glass run these two glass systems will have different thicknesses and, therefore, slightly different pigments.

By substituting the standard clear glass for Low Iron the glass appearance will be consistent across the face.

The 'greening' effect of standard clear glass is more noticeable at its exposed edges, which is why is most often used for frameless glass balustrades and glass beams where the glass edges and exposed.
