Protective Coatings for Glass

Glass is an extremely durable material, especially when systems use toughened glass. This being said, glass in environments with harsher air conditions can be subject to minor damage and etching.

For example, in a marine environment, the salty air can damage a glass surface over time. Luckily with modern advances in glazing technology, protective coatings have been developed to increase the durability of the glass without compromising on a minimal design and clear views.

Protective Barrier

Protective coatings for glass act as a lasting protective barrier that stops limescale, moisture, alkalinity and dirt from bonding to the glass and is therefore sometimes referred to as 'Self-Cleaning' coating or 'Low Maintenance'.

The protective coating forms a chemical bond with the glass so does not peel, flake or crack over time. The coating itself is transparent, chemically inert and UV stable. As well as ensuring easier upkeep to the glass for the end users it also protects the glass from contamination during construction meaning that the finished project is still as pristine as it was at installation.

Protective coatings for glass can be applied to pre-installed panes and window systems before installation or applied post construction and to existing buildings.

'Low Maintenance' Protective Coatings for Glass

The surface of glass is not smooth and consists of microscopic peaks and potholes. Both organic and inorganic contaminants fill these potholes and chemically react with the glass, firmly bonding to the surface. Because of this, cleaning glass becomes more difficult and visibility deteriorates.

One option of protective coatings for glass from IQ is a polymeric resin and, when applied to ordinary glass, it cross-links to form a strong chemical bond. The coating is completely transparent, chemically inert, non-hazardous and UV stable. Unlike a film the protective coating becomes part of the glass so will not peel, flake or crack.

The result is IQ's Protective Low-Maintenance Glass that prevents contaminants from bonding to the surface and limits further damage caused by corrosion and chemical attack. Dirt can easily be removed using normal cleaning methods. This is one of the most effective protective coatings for glass on the market.
