A ‘floating’ industrial style glazed extension in North Yorkshire

Replacing an existing external metal terrace, a new ‘floating’ industrial style glazed extension designed by Mass Architecture draws in maximum natural light which was key to the client’s brief. The terrace property is narrow in footprint over four floors, so it was imperative that the new sunroom extension would not cast the lower ground level into shade.

Spanning just under 5m wide, a contemporary industrial style glazed extension with structural glass, slim bi-folding doors, aluminium casement glass doors and windows, and a glazing floor system help to create an open and bright sunroom that would offer a closer connection to the garden, and room to enjoy the evening sunset from its south facing orientation.

North Yorkshire

With restricted access on site, our Midlands team manually carried all structural glass systems down the narrow side alley due to the nature of the period townhouse plot.

The tallest part of the glazed sunroom reaches over 3m high maximising a sense of space with six fixed structural glass panels joining the full height bi folding doors all finished in anthracite RAL 7016 to match the structural steels of the foundations and steel stairs to the subterranean lower ground level.

The slim bi-fold doors achieve a wide opening aperture further enhancing connections to the garden. Casement glass windows and doors surround the industrial style glazed extension and the flooring from the modern kitchen extends to the new space forming part of this contemporary cohesive design.

Solar control coatings were also included in the structural glass to prevent overheating in the summer months.

A rain chain is used to drain water from the structural Invisio glass roof, adding to this industrial style chic glazed extension design.

When looking at this industrial style glazed extension from the garden, it appears to be ‘floating’ off the ground.

The result is a welcoming sunroom that can be enjoyed throughout the seasons without casting the subterranean utility space into darkness.
