Glass extension in Leicester with coordinated walls and rooflights

The design challenge at Warren Hill was to create a highly glazed rear extension that improved the relationship between the existing house, the new living spaces and the garden. The glazing needed to provide large openings, natural ventilation and daylight from several orientations without fragmenting the appearance of the extension.

Three sets of slim framed sliding doors were connected with structural glass walls to form the principal glass box. Flush thresholds create level transitions to the garden, while the minimal framing allows the fixed and opening elements to read as one coordinated composition.

Above, a combination of fixed and automated rooflights introduces daylight from different positions across the roof. This layered glazing strategy allows the glass extension in Leicester to receive daylight throughout the day while providing controlled natural ventilation when required.

Slim sliding doors connected to structural glass walls

Rectangular fixed structural rooflights were positioned intermittently within a recessed section of the roof, creating a lightwell effect across the extension. This combination of fixed and opening roof glazing brings daylight deeper into the interior while supporting controlled airflow through the highly glazed space.

Performance considerations

Performance detailing at Warren Hill focused on daylight, natural ventilation and solar control across the large glazed elevations and roof openings.

Solar control glass was specified to the rooflights and principal glazed elevations to help reduce solar heat gain and glare. This supports internal comfort while retaining the high levels of natural light required by the architectural brief.

The automated opening rooflight provides purge ventilation at roof level, helping warm air escape from the extension without compromising the minimal glazing design. Aluminium casement windows provide additional local ventilation, with slim profiles coordinated alongside the sliding doors and structural glazing.

The fixed rooflights use thermally broken structural glazing details, while the sliding doors use thermally broken aluminium framing and insulated glass units.
