Glass sidefill extension breathes new life into home clinic

Spire Restorations was commissioned to convert one half of the double-fronted 1920’s house on Victoria Park Road (approximately one mile from Leicester city centre) into a light and airy entrance leading to the clinic within the converted garage at the rear and side of the ground floor.  The renovation would need to integrate seamlessly with the Arts & Crafts architecture yet set itself apart from the residential side of the dwelling using bold structural glazing which would appeal to customers.

This project is the conversion of an existing integral garage into a clinic consulting room, together with a glass sidefill extension, located between the external side wall of the garage and the existing wall of the garage on the adjoining property. The existing house is a detached house.

The renovation project rolled out during the disruptive two years of the global pandemic during which time, tradesmen were scarce.  The team at IQ were on hand to ensure the glass sidefill extension was made to measure and delivered to site on time.

Once the ground floor had been levelled and the wheelchair access ramp complete, the 3.3m high aluminium casement door was installed along with a shaped toplight. Here, the side glass and bespoke frameless effect fixed glass roof with 4 silicone jointed panes could be engaged at the same time as the guttering system. These seemingly separate areas of architectural glazing were brought together by the IQ team to create a bright glass sidefill extension that merged perfectly with the existing structures.

The garage door was replaced with IQ’s high specification Invisio frameless box window.  This pop out window can serve as a place to sit or a large sill, allowing the west facing evening sunshine to flood through at different angles without overheating due to the solar control coating.

The structural glazing offers the ‘curb appeal’ that the clinic desired. With natural daylight flooding the space, creating a warm and inviting ambience within the glass sidefill extension.

Owner, John Sandford added “IQ provided a great bespoke product and have been helpful and supportive throughout.”

“Initially, when groundworks commenced, neighbours on the road raised concerns about the Art Deco architectural charm being lost and not sympathetically preserved.”

“Subsequently, we have had dozens of people stopping and taking images, asking where the glazing came from.  Neighbours were genuinely pleased at the end result, just as we are.”
