Modern glazed poolhouse extension

Oversized frameless glazing to new west wing for a Luxury Leisure Extension in West Yorkshire

A traditional stone-built family home in West Yorkshire has been transformed with a striking modern glazed extension, creating a dedicated leisure, pool and spa wing that seamlessly connects the property to its breathtaking woodland surroundings.

Designed by ONE17 Design, the new west wing was conceived as a luxury wellness space that maximises natural light, enhances the connection to nature, and captures uninterrupted views across the valley through extensive oversized frameless glazing.

Expansive frameless sliding glass doors connect the new space to the woodland valley

A modern glazed extension to the rear of an existing stone built family home in West Yorkshire features expansive oversized glazing to maximise the beautiful vistas from the edge of the valley reaching across to the natural woodland.

Architect, ONE17 Design was commissioned to design an extension forming a west wing to the existing property as a dedicated leisure space, connecting to its surroundings by harnessing far-reaching views through oversized frameless glazing.

This modern glazed extension houses a dedicated gym, games room pool and spa areas. The fabric of the new west wing comprises of a solid steel frame that connects to the original part of the stone built property.

A façade of oversized fixed glass windows with glass-to-glass corners, slim framed sliding glass doors and structural frameless effect rooflight envelopes the newbuild, maximising natural light ingress and framing spectacular vistas of the surrounding woodland, achieving wellness design for the whole family to enjoy.

Internal glass was installed to define the separate spaces without compromising the daylight, views and open feel flow to the space.

The rear elevation within the pool space boasts expansive frameless sliding glass doors with the largest aperture having three panels adjoining wide width fixed glass windows that wrap around the south facing side exposing the best views.

Oversized Glazing Designed for Maximum Impact

A combination of oversized fixed glass panels, frameless glass-to-glass corners, ultra-slim sliding glass doors and a structural rooflight creates a highly transparent building envelope.

These expansive glazed elements flood the interior with daylight, creating bright, welcoming spaces while framing panoramic views of the surrounding woodland landscape. The result is an immersive indoor-outdoor experience that supports modern wellness-focused living.

Internal glazing systems were also incorporated throughout the extension to define individual leisure areas without restricting light flow or interrupting sightlines, maintaining the open and spacious feel of the interior.

High-Performance Structural Glazing for Energy Efficiency

While achieving expansive views was a primary design objective, thermal performance and energy efficiency were equally important considerations.

An external timber overhang works in conjunction with high-performance solar control glazing to regulate solar gain and improve indoor comfort during warmer months. These measures help the extension comply with current building regulations while supporting long-term energy efficiency.

A key feature of the project is the impressive structural rooflight, spanning more than five metres in length. Constructed from three large panes of specialist glazing, the rooflight incorporates full polyamide thermal breaks throughout the system, effectively separating internal and external elements to maximise insulation performance.

Engineered for Challenging Environmental Conditions

Due to the exposed valley-side location and the large dimensions of the glazing panels, specialist high-performance glazing was required throughout the project.

Several glass units exceed three metres in width and almost three metres in height. These oversized glazing panels were engineered to withstand demanding environmental conditions, including strong wind loads and driving rain, while maintaining exceptional thermal and structural performance.

A Seamless Connection Between Architecture and Landscape

The completed extension successfully combines contemporary architectural design with advanced glazing technology to create a luxurious leisure environment immersed in nature.

Through the use of oversized glass walls, frameless corners, slim sliding doors and structural roof glazing, the extension delivers uninterrupted views of the woodland valley while providing exceptional comfort, performance and style.

The result is a sophisticated glazed extension that perfectly balances wellness, leisure and modern living within a spectacular natural setting.
