Stone Haven is a sustainable new build in Cornwall with large glass doors, frameless glazing and natural external materials selected to connect the house with its coastal landscape. Designed by Woodford Architecture, the two-part home is clad in Cornish slate and sustainably sourced timber, with a minimal glazed link bridging the separate building forms.

IQ Glass supplied a coordinated coastal glazing package including slim framed sliding glass doors, structural glass walls, fixed aluminium windows and frameless glass balustrades. Solar control and low-maintenance coatings were specified to support comfort and durability across the highly glazed elevations.

Large glass doors connecting a sustainable Cornish new build

The architectural challenge was to unite two materially distinct parts of the house without weakening their individual character. One volume uses Cornish slate, while the other is wrapped in timber. A minimal glazed link and carefully aligned glass elevations create a clear connection between them while allowing the natural materials to remain visually dominant.

The south-facing elevations required extensive glazing to capture coastal views and daylight, but this increased the need to manage solar gain and maintenance. The glazing specification therefore combined large glass areas with solar control coatings and low-maintenance glass, particularly valuable in an exposed marine environment.

Timber posts were coordinated with the glazing joints and concealed fixing positions. This global alignment allows the structural glass, sliding systems and timber structure to read as one architectural composition rather than a series of separate facade elements.

Slim sliding glass doors across the coastal elevations

Minimal sliding glass doors run along the open-plan ground-floor living area within the timber-clad volume. The large glazed elevation provides direct access to the external decking while maintaining uninterrupted views towards the Cornish coastline when closed.

Further sliding door systems span the upper and lower floors at the square end of the house, with an additional installation forming the opening side of the projecting glass box. The consistent 21mm vertical junctions keep the different elevations visually coordinated.

The first-floor sliding opening is protected by a frameless glass balustrade, creating a Juliette balcony that allows the doors to open fully while retaining the required guarding.

Structural glass walls aligned with timber posts

The smaller glass box projects from the stone-clad volume to create a sheltered seating area overlooking the grassy slope. Two elevations use thermally broken structural glass walls, while the third is formed by slim sliding doors opening towards the decking and garden.

The Invisio structural glazing system allows the perimeter framework to be concealed within the surrounding construction. Timber posts support the roof and align with the structural glass joints, maintaining a frameless effect while resolving the relationship between glass, timber and the wider building structure.

The glazed link between the two main volumes uses the same restrained approach, allowing daylight and views to continue through the centre of the house without creating a visually heavy connection.

Performance considerations

The performance strategy for this sustainable new build in Cornwall with large glass doors was driven by solar exposure, thermal control, coastal maintenance and safety at first-floor openings.

Solar control glass was specified across the principal south-facing glazing to reduce heat gain and glare while retaining daylight and coastal views. Low-maintenance coatings reduce the frequency and difficulty of cleaning exposed glass and help protect the external surface from deposits associated with the marine environment.

The sliding doors combine thermally broken aluminium frames with tested air, water and wind performance. Structural glass walls use concealed thermally broken fixing profiles, while the external balustrade uses toughened laminated glass and an externally suitable interlayer to provide clear guarding at the upper-floor opening.

Together, these measures allow the large glazed areas to support the architectural and environmental aims of the project without treating glass area alone as evidence of sustainable performance.

Stone Haven demonstrates how a sustainable new build in Cornwall with large glass doors can combine local materials, frameless structural glazing and solar-control measures within one coordinated architectural package.
