Performance considerations
The performance strategy for this sustainable new build in Cornwall with large glass doors was driven by solar exposure, thermal control, coastal maintenance and safety at first-floor openings.
Solar control glass was specified across the principal south-facing glazing to reduce heat gain and glare while retaining daylight and coastal views. Low-maintenance coatings reduce the frequency and difficulty of cleaning exposed glass and help protect the external surface from deposits associated with the marine environment.
The sliding doors combine thermally broken aluminium frames with tested air, water and wind performance. Structural glass walls use concealed thermally broken fixing profiles, while the external balustrade uses toughened laminated glass and an externally suitable interlayer to provide clear guarding at the upper-floor opening.
Together, these measures allow the large glazed areas to support the architectural and environmental aims of the project without treating glass area alone as evidence of sustainable performance.

- Structural glass walls: concealed thermally broken Invisio fixing profile approximately 63mm deep; max glass thickness 41.5mm; expected Uw 1.1 W/m²K; minimum fixing setback 55mm; structure deflection allowance 5mm
- Frameless glass balustrade: toughened laminated glass up to 21.5mm; max height 1100mm; line load up to 3kN; max pane width 6000mm, calculated to project requirements; integrated with the first-floor sliding opening as a Juliette balcony
- Glass specification: solar control coating applied to the principal south-facing units; low-maintenance coating specified to reduce cleaning requirements and support exposed coastal glazing
- Project interfaces: structural glass walls and sliding doors aligned with timber posts; concealed perimeter fixings used across the projecting glass box and central glazed link
