Orchard House

Bespoke glazing for a luxury home in Radlett

Orchard House is an expansive new build featuring bespoke glazing for a luxury home in Radlett. The highly glazed design uses a combination of frameless and slim framed systems to create direct connections with the gardens, central courtyard, external terraces and indoor swimming pool.

The architectural glazing package combines oversized sliding glass doors, structural glass walls, frameless picture windows, glass balustrades and slim aluminium casement windows. Specialist details include marine-grade framing around the swimming pool, solar control glass to south-facing elevations and metal sliding screens for integrated privacy and shading.

The result is a coordinated glazing design that supports the H-shaped floor plan while delivering natural light, large garden openings and year-round thermal performance.

Bespoke glazing for a luxury home arranged around a central courtyard

The design challenge at Orchard House was to coordinate an extensive glazing package across a large new build without creating a fragmented appearance. The H-shaped floor plan wraps around a central courtyard, with a mature tree and external dining terrace forming the focus of the rear garden.

Oversized sliding doors were positioned throughout the ground floor to connect the principal living spaces with the courtyard, terraces and surrounding gardens. Floor-to-ceiling structural glass and frameless picture windows introduce further daylight while preserving clear views across the property.

Large-format limestone cladding at ground-floor level contrasts with the rendered upper storey, creating a neutral architectural background for the glazing. Bespoke pressings and flashings conceal exposed fixings, allowing the different glazed elements to read as one controlled architectural package.

Opening corner sliding doors and courtyard glazing

Slim sliding glass doors were installed in several configurations, including an opening corner arrangement that allows the glass panels to move away from the junction without leaving a permanent corner post.

When open, the corner configuration creates a wide connection between the interior, central courtyard and rear garden, with the roof appearing to float above the opening. The minimal frames preserve views when closed, while flush thresholds provide a level transition between the living spaces and external terraces.

Metal sliding screens were integrated in front of selected glazed elevations to provide privacy and solar shading without changing the minimal character of the façade.

Marine-grade glazing for the indoor swimming pool

One wing of the house contains an indoor swimming pool, where sliding glass doors create a direct connection with the surrounding external areas. The framing was specified with a marine-grade finish to improve its resistance to the humid, chemically demanding pool environment.

The sliding doors allow the pool room to operate as an indoor-outdoor space throughout the year while maintaining the same minimal glazing language used across the rest of the property.

Structural glass walls and frameless glass balustrades were also incorporated into the wider design, maintaining transparency while responding to the different safety, environmental and performance requirements across the home.

Performance considerations

Performance detailing at Orchard House was driven by the scale and orientation of the glazing, the indoor swimming pool environment and the requirement for enhanced thermal performance and security.

Solar control coatings were specified for south-facing glazed elevations to reduce solar glare and limit the risk of overheating. All bespoke glazing systems were fully thermally broken, helping maintain comfortable internal temperatures and reduce thermal bridging across the building envelope.

The sliding doors used internal key locking to support the security requirements of the new build and comply with Part Q. Within the pool area, marine-grade finishes provide additional protection against humidity and airborne chemicals.

Together, these measures allow the bespoke glazing for a luxury home in Radlett to maintain large areas of transparent glass while addressing solar control, thermal efficiency, security and environmental exposure.
