Frameless Glazing in Weybridge for an Award Winning Garden Extension

Oatlands Close is an award winning residential renovation and extension in Weybridge, Surrey, designed by SOUP Architects. The project transformed a four bedroom house with a poor connection to its rear garden into a contemporary family home centred around light, landscape and movement. A new ground floor extension stretches across the width of the site, opening towards a mature garden and a separate garden studio beyond.

IQ Glass was appointed to provide the specialist glazing package, delivering a large sliding glass door installation that reinforces the relationship between the extension and its landscaped surroundings. This project demonstrates how frameless glazing in Weybridge can be used to strengthen connections between architecture and garden spaces while maintaining a clear and contemporary design language.

Transforming a Disconnected Garden Relationship 

The existing property sat on an unusual plot that pivots away from the street, creating a long garden that was visually and physically disconnected from the house. The client brief focused on improving everyday family living while creating a stronger relationship with the landscape. Rather than adopting a conventional glass box extension, SOUP Architects developed an asymmetrical ground floor addition that stretched across the site and opened towards key views of the garden.  

One of the key challenges was ensuring that the extension felt integrated with the landscape rather than simply attached to the rear of the house. Large areas of glazing were required to frame views and maximise daylight, but these needed to be detailed carefully to avoid visual clutter and maintain the calm material palette that defines the scheme. The project also required coordination with structural elements concealed within the architecture to preserve clean internal lines and uninterrupted views. 

Slim Sliding Doors Opening the House to the Garden 

IQ Glass designed and installed a large minimal framed sliding door system to the dining area of the new extension. This opening forms the principal connection between the house and garden, allowing the interior to open directly onto the external living spaces. The three panel configuration was selected to maximise glazing area while maintaining practical operation and low visual impact. 

The slim sightlines of the sliding system allow the extension to feel immersed within the landscape, with the garden becoming a continuation of the living space beyond. When closed, the large panes maintain expansive views while drawing daylight deep into the extension thanks to the slim framing. When open, the glazing creates a seamless transition between interior and exterior, supporting the architects’ objective of reconnecting the home with its site. This use of frameless glazing in Weybridge plays a central role in the success of the overall design.  

Integrating Glazing Within an Award Winning Architectural Design 

A significant part of the glazing design involved coordinating the sliding doors with the surrounding structure. The sliding door head could not be fully recessed within the building envelope, so IQ Glass developed bespoke aluminium pressings to conceal the visible head section while maintaining the clean appearance of the façade. The head structure was also strapped back to align with the primary steelwork, allowing the door to remain precisely positioned within the architectural composition.  

These details ensure that the glazing feels fully integrated rather than applied as an independent element. The result is a restrained and carefully resolved façade that reinforces the extension’s sculptural form while preserving long views across the landscaped garden. The quality of the design has been recognised through multiple awards, including the RIBA South East Award 2018, the RIBA South East Small Project Award 2018 and a place on the longlist for the RIBA House of the Year 2018.

Light, Landscape and Architectural Value 

The extension at Oatlands Close demonstrates how contemporary glazing can transform the experience of an existing home without relying on excessive complexity.
