Marlborough Avenue

Contemporary glazed link extension

Marlborough Avenue underwent a significant transformation to create a brighter, more contemporary family home. Working alongside Morgan Lloyd Jones Architects, IQ Glass supplied a bespoke glazing package that formed part of an extensive rear extension and internal remodelling project, designed to maximise natural light and strengthen the connection between the home and its garden.

The design sought to revitalise a dark lower-ground floor, replacing enclosed spaces with open-plan living areas flooded with daylight. Central to this vision was the introduction of a structural glass link, large-format sliding doors, frameless roof glazing and carefully positioned architectural glazing elements that merge contemporary design with the character of the original 1950s property.

Creating Light Through Architectural Glazing

A key objective of the project was to bring natural daylight deep into the floorplan without compromising the spatial arrangement of the home. To achieve this, a frameless structural glass link was introduced between the original building and the new extension, creating a transparent connection that allows daylight to pass through the centre of the property.

The glazed link was carefully designed to minimise visual obstruction and prevent overshadowing of adjacent living spaces. Rather than acting as a solid extension element, the frameless glazing creates a light-filled transition zone between old and new architecture, preserving views and maintaining a strong sense of openness throughout the ground floor.

A structural eaves window and additional fixed glazing elements further enhance daylight penetration, ensuring that even the deepest areas of the home benefit from natural illumination.

Large Sliding Doors and Seamless Garden Connections

To the rear elevation, large-format Sieger® slim sliding doors establish a direct relationship between the internal living spaces and the landscaped garden beyond. Their minimal framing maximises the glazed area, creating uninterrupted views while allowing natural light to flood the interior.

The sliding systems were detailed with an IQ integrated slot drain, providing discreet water management while maintaining clean threshold lines and a seamless transition between inside and outside.

Together, these large glazed openings contribute to the open-plan character of the extension, allowing the home to feel larger, brighter and more connected to its surroundings.

Roof Glazing and Natural Ventilation

Natural light is further enhanced through the introduction of roof glazing, including an A.R.E.S.® Automated Rising Electric Rooflight. Positioned strategically within the extension, the rooflight introduces daylight from above while also providing effective natural ventilation.

The rooflight works in conjunction with the sliding doors to facilitate passive cooling, helping to regulate indoor temperatures during warmer months. Solar control glass was specified throughout the glazing package to reduce solar gain and improve year-round comfort, while the architectural roof overhang provides additional shading from direct sunlight.

This combination of solar-control glazing, natural ventilation and carefully considered architectural detailing creates a comfortable living environment without compromising the transparency of the design.

Contemporary Detailing for a Coastal Environment

Located close to the Humber Estuary, the project required glazing systems capable of delivering long-term performance within a coastal environment. Marine-grade finishes were specified across the glazing package to provide enhanced durability and corrosion resistance, ensuring the systems maintain their appearance and functionality over time.

The glazing systems feature a combination of bespoke finishes, including black-framed elements and stainless steel detailing, carefully selected to complement the contemporary architectural language of the extension while contrasting with the original house.

Technical Details

  • IQ Invisio® structural glazing for the frameless glazed link and eaves glazing.
  • Sieger® slim sliding doors with integrated slot drainage for minimal thresholds and effective water management.
  • A.R.E.S.® automated rooflight providing natural ventilation and passive cooling.
  • Aluminium frame fixed windows and Sieger® casement doors to complement the wider glazing package.
  • Solar control glazing specified throughout to improve comfort and reduce solar gain.
  • Marine-grade finishes selected to enhance durability in the coastal environment

This carefully coordinated glazing package enabled the creation of a highly transparent extension that combines contemporary architectural design with long-term performance, thermal comfort and everyday practicality.

The completed extension successfully transforms a previously dark and enclosed lower-ground floor into a bright, flexible living environment centred around natural light and transparency. Through the use of structural glazing, minimal-framed sliding doors, rooflights and carefully integrated architectural details, the project creates a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces while balancing contemporary design with everyday family living.

The result is a modern glazed extension that breathes new life into a well-loved home, demonstrating how carefully designed architectural glazing can dramatically improve both the appearance and functionality of an existing property.
