Project overview

Located in Buckinghamshire, this residential extension was designed to enhance natural light, improve the flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, and create a flexible open-plan living environment.

The design combines traditional brickwork with modern architectural glazing, demonstrating how contemporary rear extensions can complement existing homes while delivering improved functionality and visual appeal.

Slim Framed Sliding Doors for Maximum Transparency

A key feature of the project is the installation of ultra-slim sliding glass doors configured in a bi-parting arrangement. This design maximises the opening width and creates a wide connection between the home and outdoor entertaining areas.

The rear glazed elevation consists of, two sliding panels and two fixed glass panels wich are aproximently 8 metres wide and 3 metres high. When closed, the slim sliding doors provide exceptional views through minimal 21mm sightlines, delivering a near-frameless appearance that maximises daylight and enhances the sense of space throughout the extension.

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Living

The sliding door system incorporates a flush threshold detail, creating a smooth and accessible transition between the interior floor finish and the external patio area.

This seamless connection strengthens the relationship between the home and garden, making the extension ideal for entertaining, family living, and year-round enjoyment of outdoor spaces.

The continuation of subtle brickwork detailing across the extension façade further helps blend contemporary architecture with the traditional character of the property.

Bespoke Aluminium Casement Window Design

Alongside the sliding glass doors, a custom aluminium casement window was manufactured to match the full height of the glazed elevation.

Positioned to the side of the extension, the window increases natural daylight penetration from multiple angles, creating brighter and more comfortable living spaces. The consistent vertical proportions between the glazing elements contribute to a clean and cohesive architectural aesthetic.

High-Performance Glazing and Energy Efficiency

The architectural glazing used throughout the extension has been engineered to deliver excellent thermal performance without compromising on aesthetics.

The slim aluminium frames feature advanced thermal break technology, helping to reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency. The glazing system complies with Part L Building Regulations, providing homeowners with confidence in both the environmental and economic performance of the extension.

The Result

The completed Little Marlow extension delivers a contemporary open-plan living space filled with natural light and uninterrupted garden views.

The combination of slim framed sliding doors, bespoke aluminium casement windows, flush threshold detailing, and high-performance glazing creates a flexible and welcoming environment that encourages indoor-outdoor living while respecting the character of the original home.

The project demonstrates how carefully designed architectural glazing can transform a traditional property into a bright, modern living space that meets the demands of contemporary family life.
