Contemporary rear extension to terraced home in Lime Grove

Contemporary Rear Extension with Minimal Glazing

Located in Shepherd's Bush, West London, this contemporary rear extension transforms a traditional terraced property into a bright and spacious home connected to its garden. Working alongside LBMV Architects and Convert-Construction Ltd, IQ Glass delivered a bespoke glazing package that maximises natural daylight while maintaining a clean, minimalist architectural aesthetic.

The design centred on creating a stronger relationship between the kitchen and dining spaces and the outdoor environment. By combining ultra-slim sliding doors, frameless structural glazing and minimalist rooflights, the extension feels significantly larger, brighter and more open than the original layout.

The Design Brief

Like many Victorian and Edwardian homes in London, the rear of the property suffered from limited natural light. The brief called for a contemporary extension that would flood the lower ground floor with daylight while maintaining elegant, uncluttered detailing throughout.

The architectural design required multiple glazing elements to work seamlessly together, including sliding doors, structural glass walls, clerestory glazing and large rooflights. These systems needed to align perfectly to create uninterrupted sightlines and a frameless appearance both internally and externally.

The homeowners wanted to bring more daylight into the lower ground floor and create a stronger connection between the interior living spaces and the garden. The extension required minimal sightlines and large areas of glazing while maintaining the clean architectural language developed by the design team.

Bespoke Architectural Glazing

A two-panel minimal windows® sliding door forms the primary opening onto the garden, providing uninterrupted views while allowing natural ventilation throughout the kitchen and dining area. Finished in RAL 8019, the slim framed system complements the contemporary material palette of the extension.

To maximise daylight penetration, frameless structural glazing was incorporated throughout the design, including vertical glazed elements and a structural glass clerestory above the main opening. These large expanses of glass increase the sense of openness and create a stronger visual connection with the outdoors.

Frameless Roof Glazing

Large frameless rooflights were strategically positioned above the extension to bring daylight deep into the centre of the home. The structural glass roof sections are silicone-jointed to minimise visual interruptions and create clean glass-to-glass connections throughout the roof structure.

Together with the vertical glazing elements, the rooflights ensure that natural light reaches every part of the extended living space, reducing reliance on artificial lighting during the day.

High Performance Design

While the glazing was designed to appear as minimal as possible, performance remained a key requirement. Thermally broken glazing systems help maintain comfortable internal temperatures throughout the year, while solar control glass reduces overheating during warmer months.

The result is a contemporary extension that combines elegant architectural detailing with the performance standards required for modern living.
