The rear extension spanned two storeys and encompassed the lower ground floor living area, dining room and kitchen as well as the upper floor living space.
In order to flood the internal space with natural light the entire double-height rear elevation of the extension was designed to be glazed. IQ investigated a few different options for this double-height glass with the clients, including more cost-effective solutions involving fixed structural glass and bi-folding doors to the base.
In the end, the clients desire for an interrupted double height of glass prevailed and IQ designed the elevation using our slim framed minimal windows system.
The doors installed on this renovation project were slightly outside the standard tested sizes of the minimal windows system. However, after consulting with our design team, our installation team and the system house Keller, we determined that due to the low wind load of the area and the sheltered nature of the architectural glazing that we would be happy to create this bespoke glazing solution.
The ultimate height of the slim sliding doors we installed was 4.515m (from back of frame). These tall sliding doors were also slightly outside of the recommended ratio of height to width, as they were so tall. But again, we held consultations between our various departments, making alterations to the system to suit the project requirements.
The result is an impressive double-height elevation of architectural glazing, showcasing very minimal aluminium framing and oversized glass units.
The three-pane minimal window was locked via the Type 4 manual lock (the internal lock lock). The sliding doors were also installed with our integrated drainage channel externally. The base frame and external drainage were finished flush to create a seamless transition from inside to out.
The mezzanine floor overlooks the double height glass. In order to maximise the amount of natural light that could penetrate through the building the mezzanine and internal staircase were lined with frameless structural glass balustrades.
