London's mews properties are rich in history, originally serving as stables and coach houses for grand residences. Today, these characterful homes are among the capital's most desirable properties. However, their compact footprints often present challenges when homeowners seek additional living space, improved natural light, and modern comfort.

At Elizabeth Mews in Belsize Park, award-winning architects Trewhela Williams were commissioned to transform a former garage and refurbish the ground floor of a historic mews house. The design focused on creating a brighter, more functional home without extending beyond the existing footprint.

To complement the minimalist architecture and maximise daylight throughout the interior, IQ Glass supplied a floor-to-ceiling frameless pivot door, creating a seamless connection between the home and its courtyard.

Breathing New Life into a London Mews Property

The existing garage occupied the front of the property and offered little thermal protection or practical value. Beyond the garage, a series of small cellular rooms faced a neglected courtyard, resulting in poor daylight levels, limited ventilation, and inefficient thermal performance.

By integrating the former garage into the home's internal layout, Trewhela Williams reclaimed valuable living space while upgrading the building fabric to modern thermal standards. Opening up the front elevation improved natural daylight penetration, enhanced views, and enabled effective cross-ventilation throughout the property.

The result is a warm, contemporary home that respects the character of the original mews building while providing a significantly improved living environment for its occupants.

 

A key feature of the redesign is IQ Glass's floor-to-ceiling frameless pivot door, which forms a striking visual and functional link between the interior living spaces and the courtyard beyond.

The minimalist glazing solution creates a bright, ventilated lightwell that draws natural light deep into the floor plan. With uninterrupted sightlines, slim detailing, and clean architectural lines, the pivot door supports the project's contemporary aesthetic while maintaining a strong connection to the outdoors.

The oversized pivot opening introduces a dynamic and engaging transition between spaces. When opened, the door creates a sense of movement and fluidity, enhancing the experience of moving through the home.
