The specialist glazing package combines a three-track sliding door system, casement windows and a large frameless structural glass roof. Each element was coordinated with the supporting steelwork, existing walls and concealed drainage to create one integrated architectural composition.

Structural Glazing with a Victorian Rear Extension

The design challenge was not simply to introduce more glass, but to create a contemporary rear extension that remained comfortable and considered within the context of the existing Victorian property.

The principal glazed elevation sits beneath a substantial structural glass roof, requiring the sliding doors, roof glazing, steelwork and surrounding construction to be resolved together. Dedicated supporting structure was designed around the main glazing, with detailed interfaces between the roof, sliding system, existing walls and concealed guttering.

Rather than treating the glazing as a series of independent elements, the rear elevation and roof were developed as one continuous intervention. This allows the extension to feel open and light while maintaining a clear architectural relationship with the original house.

Sliding Doors for a Minimal Garden Elevation

The principal garden elevation is formed by a three-track slimline sliding door system comprising two sliding panes and three fixed panes. The fixed, sliding, sliding, fixed, fixed arrangement creates a broad glazed façade while retaining the minimal framing required by the design.

The two central sliding panes provide the main opening onto the garden. When opened, the system creates a direct physical connection with the external space, while the remaining fixed panes preserve the wider glazed composition.

The sliding doors were coordinated with the surrounding steel framework and building finishes, allowing the elevation to transition between a fully enclosed interior and an open garden-facing space.

Structural Glass Roof to a Light-Filled Interior

A large frameless-effect structural glass roof spans the new extension, introducing natural light from above as well as through the garden-facing elevation.

The roof comprises six silicone-jointed glass panes, with steel sections positioned between the units to provide structural support. This maintains the visual prominence of the glass while responding to the span and loading requirements of the roof.

Supporting steelwork, concealed guttering and the junction above the sliding doors were carefully coordinated. The result is a restrained overhead glazing design that brings daylight deep into the extension without introducing a visually heavy rooflight frame.

Performance Considerations

Performance detailing at Dents Road focused on the relationship between the large glazed roof, sliding door elevation and supporting structure.

The structural glass roof required a suitable steel support strategy between the six glazed units, with the surrounding structure designed to control deflection and maintain the integrity of the silicone joints. Concealed guttering was integrated at the roof edge to manage rainwater without interrupting the minimal appearance.

The sliding doors use thermally broken aluminium framing and insulated glass units to support year-round internal comfort. The fixed and moving panes were configured across three tracks to provide a wide garden opening while retaining the weather and structural performance required by the rear elevation.

Together, the structural roof, sliding doors and casement windows allow the architectural glazing in London to maximise daylight and garden views while maintaining the privacy, thermal performance and controlled detailing required for a Victorian house renovation.
