Black House Farm

Glazing for Award Winning Barn Conversion

Award-Winning Barn Conversion Enhanced by Architectural Glazing

Set within the South Downs National Park, Black House Farm is a striking transformation of a 17th-century farmhouse and historic barn into a contemporary family home. Designed by Robin Lee Architecture, the project carefully balances heritage preservation with modern design, creating elegant living spaces that remain deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.

Working within the constraints of a conservation area, the design sought to retain the character of the original structures while introducing a modern extension that reflects contemporary living. Natural materials and black timber cladding create a visual bridge between old and new, allowing the historic architecture and modern additions to exist in harmony.

Maximising Light and Landscape

A key objective of the project was to open the home to its rural setting and maximise natural daylight throughout the interiors. IQ Glass supplied and installed a range of high-performance architectural glazing solutions that help blur the boundary between inside and out.

Large-format slim framed sliding glass doors connect the bedroom suites, home office, and open-plan living areas directly to the gardens and surrounding countryside. The ultra-minimal sightlines provide uninterrupted views across the landscape, while the black powder-coated aluminium frames complement the dark timber façade and contemporary architectural language.

Natural light now flows throughout the home, creating bright and inviting interiors while ensuring every space benefits from a visual connection to the outdoors.

Slim Framed Sliding Glass Doors

IQ Glass installed a combination of two-track and three-track sliding glass doors across both the converted barn and new extension. Selected openings utilise pocket door configurations, allowing the glass panels to slide completely into concealed wall pockets. When fully open, these systems create seamless transitions between internal and external spaces.

Featuring exceptionally slim 20mm vertical sightlines, the sliding doors deliver expansive views without compromising thermal performance. The system achieves excellent insulation values, helping to create a comfortable and energy-efficient home while maintaining a clean and contemporary aesthetic.

Premium stainless-steel running gear ensures smooth operation and long-term durability, providing effortless day-to-day use despite the large glass panel sizes.

High-Performance Aluminium Windows and Doors

Alongside the sliding glazing systems, thermally broken aluminium casement windows and doors were integrated throughout the renovation. The minimalist aluminium frames offer excellent weather resistance, security, and thermal performance while remaining visually understated within the overall design.

These carefully detailed glazing elements preserve the simplicity of the architecture while providing the high levels of comfort expected from a modern family home.

Bespoke Architectural Glazing

To further enhance the building's performance and visual clarity, all bespoke glazing elements were manufactured using low-iron toughened glass with solar control coatings. This specification maximises transparency, reduces solar gain during warmer months, and ensures exceptional visual quality throughout the property.

The result is a home that successfully unites historic character with contemporary architecture, using high-performance glazing to create light-filled spaces, uninterrupted views, and a stronger connection to the surrounding South Downs landscape.
