Challenges of Creating a lazed Extension in Barnt Green
This area of Barnt Green is characterised by generous plots, contemporary redevelopments and high‑value family homes, often extended to increase living space. For this glazed extension in Barnt Green, the architectural goal was to transform the rear elevation into a calm, residential wall of glass while coordinating with stepped garden levels and existing structural elements. Achieving long runs of glazing with minimal vertical structure, maintaining weather performance, and creating recessed thresholds aligned with the redesigned terrace all formed critical design challenges. IQ Glass was involved to resolve structural compatibility, performance requirements and installation sequencing for the large format glazing.
Sliding Glass Doors That Define the Glazed Extension in Barnt Green
The primary requirement of the glazed extension in Barnt Green was the creation of a wide, uninterrupted sliding elevation across the main living area. IQ Glass supplied slim framed sliding doors using large pane sizes to reduce vertical joints and present a single fluid band of glazing across the façade. These sliding glass doors allow the living space to open directly to the upper terrace while reinforcing the modern architectural aesthetic of the remodelled home. Tracks were recessed into the floor build up to maintain near flush movement between inside and outside, supporting the horizontal emphasis designed by the architect. The glazing was coordinated with the matching aluminium casement door to ensure consistent framing, sightlines and performance.
Structural Coordination for a High‑Performance Glazed Extension in Barnt Green
A second challenge of the glazed extension in Barnt Green involved the installation of oversized glass units, several weighing more than 400kg. IQ Glass developed a handling and installation strategy with the main contractor to safely manoeuvre and position the large panes while maintaining alignment with the structural steel frame. Given the elevation’s exposure to prevailing weather, junctions at heads, jambs and thresholds were detailed to ensure airtightness, thermal performance and reliable weather protection. Thermally broken aluminium frames and insulated glazing units support comfort and energy control throughout the year, ensuring the high proportion of glazing does not compromise internal performance.
