How to Improve Natural Light in Narrow Properties

Architectural Glazing - IQ Glass UKIQ’s iconic project Sweethaws has been declared the winner of the RIBA Awards 2014. The winners of the RIBA National Awards were announced today and Sweethaws (Red Bridge House) designed by Smerin Architects is a winner within the Private Housing category.

The project has already been recognised by design critics and fellow architects as a brilliant piece of residential design and has been featured in publications such as BD Online and Wallpaper and, as an award winner, the project has now been picked up by daily architecture blog websites ArchDaily, Dezeen and Architects Journal as well as national press publications The Times and Telegraph.

Sweethaws - Architectural Glazing - IQ GlassSituated within 20 acres of woodland in Redbridge near Crowborough this new build family home consisted of 3 floors, 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. A large heated salt water pool occupies the lower ground floor. Here large minimally framed sliding glass doors encase this room on three sides with the longest edge measuring 15m. The 5 sliding panels across this face all slide to open up to 80% of the opening to the large garden spaces.

On the upper ground floor, leading onto the wrap around cantilevered balcony, more of IQ’s minimal framed sliding doors were used. Here the sliding doors were configured to slide away into hidden cavity pockets within the timber clad walls for a completely open door space.

Sweethaws - Architectural Glass - IQ GlassFrameless fixed windows were used elsewhere, on the first floor and to the stairway, made by using elements of structural glass fixed with angles and supports within the buildings construction and hidden by the buildings finishes.

The front elevation where occupants enter the home via a footbridge was clad in Cor-Ten insulated sheets. Flush glazed windows and doors, IQ’s Innovare system, act as the window solution on this face with the sleek face of the windows and doors running smoothly into the surrounding cladding.

It was great to see the diversity of projects winning awards this year. Many other practices IQ Glass work with were also announced winners across many different categories and we offer those practices, and all the nominees, our congratulations.
