A Quick and Easy Guide to Pocket Doors

Brixton House by Studio Carver with hidden glass pocket doors

Opening corner and glass pocket door to Malbrook Road dwellingWhy choose between a fully open aperture and thin framing? That is the question that specifiers frequently come up against when choosing the type of openings to use on their build. Although bi folding doors allow up to an opening of 90% of the total aperture, when the doors are closed (which is most of the year wiithin the UK!) the frame on show has a minimum vertical profile of 120mm.

IQ’s sliding glass door system offers minimal sightlines, maintaining uninterruped views with only 21mm visible frame. The slim aluminium high specification sliding glass doors can also be designed to slide into cavity pockets within walls, fully concealing the door away allowing for a fully open aperture within the building.

IQ Glass installed such a configuration of sliding doors with both pocket doors sliding away into hidden cavities within the walls of this London extension.

Unlike other pocket door systems, the IQ sliding glass door system has been especially designed to slide into cavity pockets with cavity blocking caps on the end panel of sliding glass to close up the exposed cavity opening when the doors have been slid shut.

As IQ’s sliding doors sit so close to the floor there is no fear of debris getting into the cavity and you can maintain that minimal appearance that the IQ Glass sliding doors are loved for.

The project on Malbrook Road had a 120mm cavity within the walls to allow two sliding panels to sit neatly within the insulated walls of the contemporary extension but you can have as many panels of sliding glass hiding in cavity pockets as you like, just keep in mind that each slider will need 60mm depth of space within the wall!
