Controlling Solar Gain Technical Advice Featured

The article explores how to extend upwards and incorporate a glass roof extension, from structural glazing to solar control glass.

Grand Design recently wrote a feature surrounding roof extensions, exploring the benefits of a glass extension. A project designed and installed by IQ Glass was featured, where a retired couple had added a glass box extension using structural glazing to extend upwards to create more useable space.

The project used frameless structural glazing with glass beams and fins for a fully glazed design, allowing floods of natural light into the new living area without compromising on modern performance values thanks to the thermally broken properties. The thermally broken structural glazing was specified with a solar control coating, to aid in the functionality of the space and ensure the glass box was not at risk of overheating in the summer months.

Dan Finnegan, Contracts Director at IQ, explained that sandblasted glass had also been specified on one elevation of the extension to grant the homeowners privacy from the neighbouring properties. The slim sliding door system used within the glass box extension was engineered to slide over the external glass wall, ensuring the owners did not have to sacrifice space to gain outside access.
