The Old Vicarage

Glazed Extension in Worcester to a Grade II Listed Home

The Old Vicarage is a three storey Grade II listed property transformed with a contemporary glazed extension in Worcester. Sympathetically designed by Herlig Architecture, the 45 sqm extension creates a new family living space with a distinctive lattice glass roof, slim sliding glass doors and aluminium casement glazing. The IQ Glass Midlands team delivered the complex bespoke roof using Invisio® structural glass to introduce abundant natural light and strengthen the connection between the house and its mature garden.

Adding a Contemporary Glazed Extension to a Listed Home

The architectural approach carefully balances the historic character of the listed property with a contemporary new addition. The lattice glass roof forms the defining feature of the extension, bringing natural light into the family living space while giving the new structure a clear architectural identity.

Black Grey steelwork within the roof coordinates with the grey Petersen brickwork and dark aluminium frames used throughout the extension. This restrained material palette helps the new addition sit sensitively alongside the original building while remaining recognisably contemporary. The result demonstrates how a glazed extension in Worcester can add light and space to a listed home without diminishing its historic character.

Engineering a Bespoke Lattice Glass Roof

One of the main challenges was creating a structural glass roof that could span more than 7 metres across the new extension. The distinctive lattice design required five large panes of glass, joined with silicone and supported by structural steel sections between the panels.

The frameless effect roof also needed to provide the required safety and weather performance. Toughened structural glass with PVB interlayers was specified, while a 5.8 degree pitch allows rainwater to drain efficiently and supports the long term performance of the glazed extension.

Installing Structural Glass Through Restricted Access

Restricted access presented a further challenge during installation. The route beside the Worcester property was only 900mm wide, preventing the use of lifting equipment for the structural glass roof.

Every section of glass therefore had to be moved and lifted manually into position. This required careful planning and coordinated handling by the IQ Glass Midlands team to protect the glazing and the listed property while achieving the precise alignment required by the lattice roof design.

Structural Roof Glazing and Slim Doors for a Light Filled Extension

The IQ Glass Midlands team installed an Invisio® structural glass roof spanning just over 7 metres across the extension. Five silicone jointed glass panels are supported by structural steel sections, creating the bold lattice pattern while preserving a frameless effect between the glass and surrounding structure. The steelwork was finished in Black Grey to complement the Petersen grey brickwork.

Three opening slim sliding glass doors connect the new family space with the garden and provide ventilation during warmer weather. Aluminium casement doors on either side open towards steps leading down to the mature garden, while three narrow fixed slot windows introduce further daylight. All sliding doors, casement doors and fixed windows were finished in RAL 7021, coordinating the glazed elevations with the lattice roof. Together, these elements show how a glazed extension in Worcester can combine bespoke structural glass, natural light and garden access within a sensitive listed building renovation.
