Moor Hall

Gable End Windows in Sutton Coldfield for a Contemporary Home

Moor Hall is a private replacement dwelling that features gable end windows in Sutton Coldfield as its defining architectural element. Designed by Neil Boddison Associates, the house has a contemporary rear elevation that opens the principal living spaces to the garden. IQ Glass worked closely with the architect from early design development through to installation, delivering a coordinated glazing package that includes slim sliding glass doors, Invisio® structural glazing, steel look aluminium doors and frameless glass balustrades.

Designing a Contemporary Glazed Rear Elevation

The replacement dwelling sits within the Four Oaks area of Sutton Coldfield, where large plots, mature landscaping and established architectural character informed the design. The classically proportioned front elevation respects the surrounding context, while the rear of the house introduces a more contemporary language of clean lines and generous glazing.

Neil Boddison Associates described the project as bridging “tradition and modernity”, with the modern rear elevation providing a deliberate contrast to the frontage. The glazing was central to this design approach, creating a light filled garden elevation while maintaining a coordinated architectural composition across both floors of the house.

Creating Three Coordinated Gable End Windows

One of the principal challenges was designing three individual gable end windows that would read as a coherent feature across the rear elevation. The two larger outer gables needed to combine shaped structural glazing with sliding doors, while the central bathroom gable required fixed glass shaped precisely to fit within the eaves.

The glazed elements needed to follow the roof geometry accurately while retaining slim sightlines and consistent detailing. Both outer gables also had to appear visually balanced, despite one opening onto a balcony and the other incorporating a Juliet balcony for guarding.

Integrating Doors and Balustrades into the Glazed Facade

The lower section of the rear elevation required three sets of outward opening doors to create direct access from the living spaces to the garden. These needed to align with the gable glazing above while introducing a steel look design that added definition to the ground floor facade.

Safe guarding was also required at the two upper level openings without disrupting views through the glazing. The external balcony and Juliet balcony therefore needed frameless glass balustrades with minimal fixing details, maintaining transparency across the elevation while meeting the practical requirements of the design.

Slim Sliding Doors and Structural Glass for the Gable End Windows

IQ Glass supplied slim sliding glass doors to the two larger first floor gables, each comprising two sliding and two fixed panes. Above the doors, four shaped panes of Invisio® structural glazing follow the roofline and are connected with black structural silicone. The tallest panes reach almost 3 metres high, extending the glazing towards the eaves and allowing natural light to enter across the full height of each gable. The central bathroom gable was completed with two shaped fixed panes of Invisio® structural glazing, creating a consistent design across all three gables.

Frameless glass balustrades were incorporated across the upper level openings, including an external balcony balustrade and a Juliet balcony. At ground floor level, three sets of steel look slim aluminium double doors were installed with full height fixed sidelights and a three panel glazing bar design. Clear toughened double glazing with Low E coatings and RAL 9005 Jet Black matt frames provide consistency across the glazing package. Together, these systems demonstrate how gable end windows in Sutton Coldfield can combine shaped structural glass, wide openings and integrated guarding within a carefully coordinated rear elevation.
