Designing Architectural Glazing for a Sustainable Yorkshire Home
The new home was designed to create generous living spaces across several levels, including a below ground swimming pool and cinema room formed through a six metre deep excavation. Each floor was planned to maintain a close relationship with a private garden, balcony or terrace, while a double height dining area provides panoramic views across the main garden.
Sustainability was central to the design, with the house developed to meet Level 4 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. The highly insulated structure, formed using insulated concrete formwork and SIPS roof panels, required glazing systems capable of supporting the project’s thermal performance goals. Connecting Multiple Levels to Gardens, Terraces and Balconies
One of the principal challenges was creating strong connections between the large internal spaces and the different outdoor areas arranged around the property. Sliding doors were required at ground and upper-floor levels to provide access to gardens, terraces and balconies without interrupting views through heavy framing.
The glazing also needed to bring daylight into the substantial floor plan and support natural ventilation. Large openings and bi-parting configurations were therefore integral to creating flexible living spaces that could extend outdoors for family gatherings and entertaining.
Balancing Extensive Glazing with Sustainability Requirements
A second challenge was specifying extensive glazing without compromising the sustainability targets of the new home. The large glazed elevations needed to combine slim sightlines with strong thermal performance, while solar shading was required to reduce the risk of overheating at the south facing dining area.
The architectural glazing package also needed to remain visually consistent across the sliding doors, glazed link and window systems. Careful coordination was required to create a coherent design while allowing daylight to travel between floors and reach the internal corridors and living spaces.
