Stockbridge Extension

Architectural Glazing in Edinburgh for a Listed Home Extension

Stockbridge Extension involved the renovation and extension of a Category B listed early Georgian villa in Edinburgh. Designed by Zone Architects and delivered by Hutton & Read, the project sensitively restores the original house while introducing a contemporary garden extension for modern family living. The long addition accommodates interconnected kitchen, dining and living spaces, creating a stronger relationship with the landscaped urban garden.

IQ Glass was appointed to design, supply and install a varied architectural glazing package for the extension. This included a bespoke aluminium pivot door with sidelights, an elevated sliding window, aluminium casement windows and structural roof glazing. Internal and external door systems were also supplied as part of the wider package.

Extending a Listed Home on a Long Urban Plot

The original Georgian house sits on a long, narrow garden plot that is overlooked by a two storey retail building on the neighbouring site. Rather than creating a conventional rear addition, the extension stretches along the garden to form a sequence of contemporary living spaces leading towards a sunny and sheltered outdoor area. The kitchen is positioned centrally between the new dining and living rooms, allowing the extension to support both everyday family life and entertaining.

The architectural approach establishes a clear contrast between the restored Georgian property and the contemporary addition. Glazed green bricks were selected for the exterior of the extension, distinguishing it from the weathered stone of the original house while helping the new structure blend into the leafy garden setting. The glazing needed to support this contrast, bringing light into the extended plan and providing carefully positioned connections with the garden without overwhelming the distinctive material finish.

Bespoke Pivot Door Connecting the Extension and Garden

A wide slim aluminium pivot door creates the principal connection between the extension, raised patio and landscaped garden. Measuring approximately 1.8m wide and positioned between two fixed sidelights, it forms a complete glazed opening approximately 3.5m wide by 3.4m high.

The framing is finished in marine grade medium bronze, complementing the green glazed brickwork and providing a warmer alternative to a conventional black frame. Clear toughened double glazing with a low E coating and heat soak testing supports thermal performance and long-term reliability.

Elevated Sliding Window and Structural Roof Glazing

An elevated two-track slim sliding window beside the dining area creates an opening approximately 3m wide by 1.9m high, introducing daylight and ventilation into the extension. Slot aeration provides additional background ventilation, while the marine grade medium bronze finish matches the pivot door. Three top hung aluminium casement windows were also supplied, including two integrated into the charcoal clad bay.

Two identical single panel Invisio® structural glass rooflights bring further daylight into the space. Each measures approximately 2766mm by 1586mm, weighs 228kg and was installed with a five degree fall for effective water run-off. Both units incorporate a laminated interlayer, low E coating and heat soak testing.

Contemporary Glazing Within a Georgian Renovation

The glazing package helps distinguish the contemporary extension while supporting the sensitive renovation of the listed villa. The pivot door, sliding window and structural glass roof draw light through the elongated plan and create varied connections with the garden and sky.

A tall Mondrian internal steel door, measuring approximately 997mm wide by 2875mm high, was installed within the refurbished entrance hall in the original part of the house. Extending almost from floor to ceiling, the slim framed door is finished in RAL 9005 Matt Black and glazed with clear toughened safety glass, creating a striking feature within the refined interior design.

Together, these elements demonstrate how architectural glazing in Edinburgh can support the sensitive adaptation of a listed home, creating light and contemporary spaces while retaining the distinct Georgian character of the original building.
