Watermark Riverfront Property in Devon

A riverfront property in Devon with bespoke glazing

This renovated riverfront property in Devon uses architectural glazing and minimal framed sliding doors to maximise the riverside views. The riverfront property in Devon sits on the banks of the River Dart, at the junction between the main river and Mill Pool.

Multilayered, the river side property is carved into the steep banks that bracket the pool and overlooks the historic Stoke Gabriel Mill Pool Dam.

The riverside glazing were all provided by IQ Glass, combining the requirements of highly robust performance with minimal sightlines. Slim sliding glass doors, frameless structurla glass and bespoke aluminium window combinations come together to create a seamless glazing design that is encapsulated within the red brick exterior.

The riverfront property in Devon was built in the late 1800’s and was used as a boat house until at least the 1950’s after which the building was completely renovated. The upper floor was originally the home of the shipwright but within the renovation, the building was combined into a two-storey, two-bedroom home.

The latest renovation sought to modernise the home whilst maintaining its heritage. The red brick walls were retained and fixed where required with architectural elements such as the balustrading and windows updated.

The sliding glass doors – which can be most effectively seen from the riverfront elevation of the building – replace the existing large-framed timber doors that overlook the river. These are a slim framed aluminium construction, using thermally broken aluminium framing with insulated glass to create an almost frameless glass elevation.

A combination of linear sliders, pivot doors and pocket sliding doors were used throughout the build. These aluminium frames had a dual-coloured frame design. The interior of the metal frame is finished with a natural silver anodised finish, whereas the external frame is finished in a specialist anodised finish in red-brown to match the appearance of the dark timber window and door frames seen locally.

All the glass within the sliding doors and other windows were heat soak tested glass units and included a solar control coating to minimise overheating.

The solar control coating used on this project was a neutral solar control finish with a 70% light transmission and a Solar factor (g-value) of 35%. This allows a high level of natural light to enter through the glazing to create a light filled interior whilst filtering the solar radiation (infrared light) away.

You can see from the images of this riverfront property in Devon that the glass is ultra clear and transparent, even with this high-performance coating.

One of the best views from the riverfront property in Devon is from the upper floors. The old timber bay window has been replaced with a bespoke arrangement of aluminium framing and clear glass to create a modern window bay.

Similar to the sliding glass doors, the aluminium bay windows have a dual colour frame, with a silver interior finish and a red-brown exterior.

The large window design offers expectational views across the river and the mill dam.

This framing design allows the building to sit comfortably within the local vernacular whilst offering expectational views and a modern interior design.
