The Deck House

Traditional home in Scotland with modern glazing solutions and exposed timber

This traditional home in Elie, Scotland was renovated and modernised, utilising aluminium framed glazing in combination with the exposed timber beams that make up some of the structural support. The home is based on the coast, a short walk from Elie beach and the brief was to increase the natural light throughout the internal living spaces.

The combination of timber and glazing allows the wider architectural design to remain traditional and in keeping with the environment, whilst achieving modern performance values thanks to the thermally broken properties of the aluminium framed glazing.

Our dedicated Scotland regional office worked on the project, designing the glazing to sit within the existing timber structure to create an authentic exposed timber finish. With timber beams sitting both horizontally and vertically, the glazing is slightly set back to allow the timber to remain a key feature in the design. The configuration of the timber and glazing is made up of two fixed windows and a slim framed casement door from the Schuco range.

Both the windows and the doors were specified with fixed toplights above and all glazing was manufactured with a marine grade finish to ensure its suitability for the coastal environment. The rear façade now opens up directly to the garden, bridging the gap between indoor and outdoor areas to allow the two environments to be merged during the warmer months.

The newly installed glazing solutions flood the internal living space with natural light throughout the day, finished in anthracite grey to create a contrast against the surrounding traditional architecture. Either side of the large fixed windows the aluminium framed glazing wraps around both sides and two smaller, more narrow windows to maximise the light intake. The Schuco casement door is complete with a flush threshold detail, making the transition to the garden seamless.

Timber and glazing is an extremely popular trend, characterised by the contrasting materials that offers endless design possibilities. The glazing in Scotland has modernised the rear façade and created highly glazed spaces that remain a comfortable living temperature throughout the year.
