Hidden within the Pitons on the island of St Lucia you will find the Sugar Beach Hotel. The luxury holiday resort was once a sugar plantation and has since been transformed into a contemporary beach resort, with a focus on retaining its original intimate charm.
IQ were commissioned to design, supply and install the architectural glazing and louvre roof systems when multiple villas on the premises were completely refurbished. Each of the villas sit 20ft above sea level, overlooking white sand beaches and boasting unrivalled views of the Caribbean ocean.
It was imperative for the exterior of the villas to be in keeping with the scenic mountain setting. The surrounding views to remain undisturbed, therefore large elevations of structural glass were specified in conjunction with local natural materials. The specified glass was and is the largest pieces of glass ever used on the island.
Sliding doors were installed alongside large panes of fixed structural glazing. IQ minimal windows® offer the slimmest sightlines, providing uninterrupted views from inside the villa.
The glass configuration used was unusual because the climate of St Lucia did not require thermal systems as in the UK. In this instance, the bespoke solution was 2 pieces of laminated glass together to form a single glazed unit, with no insulation or gas required between the two panes of glass.
Sieger® casement windows were used in conjunction with the minimal windows® systems, powder-coated for an exact colour match, the result was a completely cohesive design throughout both interior and exterior.
Sliding doors grant access from the open plan living area to outside, ultimately leading to a private infinity pool. Installing automated louvre roof systems in these areas meant that guests could enjoy the weather, whatever the time of day, whilst benefiting from some shade. The louvre roof systems are automated, the angle of the blades can be adjusted at the touch of a button, or automatically set to rotate as the sun rises and falls.
The louvre roof systems are finished in a colour scheme to match the exterior cladding of each villa. The architectural glazing methods truly enhance these rich materials, resulting in stunning individual villas, perfectly in keeping with the surrounding environment.
