This terraced home in London underwent a vast renovation to expand the useable space and help the homeowners to forge a better connection to the outside environment. A glass box extension was designed to maximise the natural light intake within the space, complete with a structural glass roof to create a brightly lit living space.
The glass extension in London was designed with as much glazing as possible, including structural glass walls on either side of the space which were silicone jointed with the horizontal structural glass roof for the most minimal design. The minimal glass to glass connections help to open up the space and create an indoor-outdoor style of living, with no visible fixing or finishing details.
Building a glass extension in London can be complex due to small or awkward plot sizes, but London based firm DIZarchitects knew how to make the most of the space by extending outwards into the patio area of the garden whilst maintaining the existing flowerbeds.
Combining modern and traditional elements, the glass extension in London was complete with a 5 pane, utlra-slim bifolding door from the Sieger range. The slim framed bifolding door stacks neatly to one side to reveal a completely open aperture when the weather permits, completely merging the two environments with a flush threshold detail.
The structural glass roof has been split into three panes to align with the bifolding doors underneath, using slim steel supports between panes for additional structural support and to match the wider metal framed design. Each steel post has been designed to sit in the middle of one of the bifolding leafs, creating a coherent and symmetrical design that was carefully planned.
When the slim framed bifolding doors are closed the glass extension in London offers picturesque views of the much loved garden, flooding the open plan ground floor with light. Solar control coatings were applied to all glazing on the project to control solar gain and prevent overheating, ensuring the space remains a comfortable living temperature all year round.
The team are on hand to discuss glass specification and ensure any specific project requirements are met.
