Glass Extension to a Grade II Listed Home in London

A contemporary rear glass extension was added to a Grade II Listed traditional Georgian home in North West London featuring IQ’s minimally framed sliding glass doors and frameless structural glazing. The glass box extension offers a minimal contemporary extension to this home, merging old and new elements.

The versatile glass extension on this traditional home uses a glass roof and frameless structural glass sides which connect to our minimally framed sliding doors with a minimal steel goalpost support. This largely glazed design opens up the interior of the house, creating a larger dining and seating area that is better suited to modern lifestyles.

The traditional London home underwent a careful renovation by Smerin Architects and the architecturally designed contemporary glass extension, was added to the property along with some discrete contemporary additions to modernise the family home.

The aluminium framing was finished in a dark grey, powder coated for a contemporary design that created a contrast against the traditional rendered home. To maintain a minimal and clear design to the rear elevation of the house, the glass roof was designed to slope back towards the house.

IQ designed a specialised detail between the glass and house to drain any rainwater away using hidden and minimal structural gutters.

The minimal connection of the structural glass roof and walls differentiate between the original property and new contemporary extension, this a crucial design requirement for most listed properties.

The contemporary rear glazed extension carefully fills the internal living spaces with natural light, using the minimally framed sliding glass doors as access to the garden, providing uninterrupted views of the perfectly landscaped garden with a slim sightline of 21mm.
