Glass Extension in London with Slim Framed Bifolding Doors

This London home renovation was designed to maximise natural light within the main living space while preserving the character and beauty of the existing garden. The brief called for a contemporary glazing solution that would strengthen the connection between the house and outdoor environment without compromising valuable garden space.

IQ Glass delivered a bespoke package of architectural glazing, including ultra-slim bifolding doors, slim framed sliding doors, a structural glass roof, and frameless glass balustrades. Together, these elements create a light-filled extension that seamlessly blends modern design with the property's traditional surroundings.

Creating a Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Connection

At the heart of the extension are ultra-slim aluminium bifolding doors that open the entire rear elevation to the garden. Specified in a six-panel bi-parting configuration, the doors stack neatly to either side, creating a wide, unobstructed opening and transforming the living space into a true indoor-outdoor environment.

A flush threshold detail ensures step-free access between the home and garden, improving accessibility while reinforcing the seamless flow between inside and outside spaces.

To complement the surrounding landscape, the slim framed bifolding doors were finished in a bespoke Khaki Green RAL colour, allowing the glazing system to integrate naturally with the garden's planting and nearby pond.

Structural Glass Roof Maximising Natural Light

A key feature of the extension is the frameless structural glass roof, which connects the new space to the existing house. The roof floods the interior with daylight, creating a bright and welcoming living area throughout the day.

Three large glass panels are joined using structural silicone bonds, eliminating the need for bulky framing and delivering a clean, minimalist appearance. This frameless design enhances the sense of openness while allowing natural light to remain the focal point of the space.

The structural glass roof works in harmony with the glazing below, creating a contemporary architectural statement that complements the home's traditional interior design.

Frameless Glass Balcony Design

On the first floor, slim framed sliding glass doors provide direct access to a private balcony overlooking the garden. These ultra-slim sliding doors maximise views and natural daylight while maintaining excellent thermal performance.

The balcony is enclosed with frameless glass balustrades, providing essential safety without visually interrupting the surrounding landscape. The transparent design preserves uninterrupted garden views while enhancing the modern appearance of the property.

Combined with the sliding doors, the frameless balustrades create a sleek and elegant balcony space that feels open, bright, and connected to the outdoors.

Bespoke Architectural Detailing

To achieve a truly minimalist aesthetic, bespoke aluminium pressings were incorporated above the bifolding doors. These custom details conceal fixing points and structural connections, helping to create the appearance of a continuous glazed elevation.

The combination of structural glass, precision-engineered aluminium detailing, and ultra-slim framing demonstrates IQ Glass' commitment to delivering high-performance glazing solutions with exceptional architectural quality.
