IQ Glass was commissioned by Emrys Architects to provide the specialist glazing and steel balcony doors to this end of terrace house refurbishment in London.
The narrow property was situated on the side of the Regents Canal with a rear elevation that overlooked the waterway.
The property has been renovated and divided many times throughout its lifetime and Emrys' concept was to reconnect the internal areas and bathe them in natural light.
What was created from the shell of the former building was a small multi-unit residential development consisting of three luxury apartments which all benefit from clever uses of glazing to bring natural light through narrow door openings.
Mondrian® steel doors were used as the balcony doors on all three apartments. Their slim steel frames worked well within the narrow doorways that were available and meant that the glass faces were maximised, bringing in the most natural light possible.
Outside the Mondrian® doors on the upper two apartments were structural glass balconies. These bespoke structural glass assemblies brought together projecting structural glass floors with frameless glass balustrades to create external balcony areas for the upper two living spaces.
On the ground floor, a fixed Mondrian® window made from thermally broken galvanised steel was used to the stairwell.
The slim framed window spans two floors to create a double height lightwell feeding natural light deep into the ground floor apartment.
The ground floor apartment benefits from even more natural light thanks to the large structural glass wall that was designed for the street side elevation.
The old shop front was replaced with this bespoke frameless glass wall with obscure glazing at the base to maintain privacy to the internal living areas.
