This 17th century Grade II Listed farmhouse sits in the South Downs National Park surrounded by the protected conservation area. Robin Lee Architecture’s design for the barn conversion and its contemporary extension was completed with high-end architectural glazing solutions by IQ Glass.
The brief was given as renovating the existing property and historical barn just next to the main house. The traditional structure was preserved adding other natural tactile materials on the exterior of the barn conversion and its extension. Black-coloured timber added a modern look and created a bridge between the 17th and 21st centuries.
Slim sliding glass doors connect all bedrooms, open plan kitchen, and home office spaces with the garden in both barn conversion and single storey extension. The black coated framing profiles perfectly match with black timber and complete the exterior look.
The glazing for this barn conversion allowed natural light to flood through the interior offering views out to the stunning green landscape from any point within the brand-new living spaces thanks to the high-quality slim aluminium frames.
IQ Glass installed two and three track slim sliding glass doors and some of them had pocket door configuration. The sliding panes can slide into the wall to be hidden and provide a broader space for transitions. Seven-point locking system is chosen to increase safety with internally locking option.
Our slim framed sliding glass doors are one of slimmest on the market with an impressive 20mm sightlines. The Uw value of the architectural glazing solution is 1.3 W/m2K and provides the best performance for the brand-new insulated barn conversion and the extension.
Both rails and wheels are stainless steel. Therefore, the door system can be used longer than other sliding glass doors on the market. The slimmest framing profiles reduce the weight of the panes and help to slide them effortlessly.
A highly thermally broken aluminium casement door is also included with a fixed structural glass next to the door.
Aluminium casement windows are located in several locations in the renovated barn. Casement windows have fixed square-edged aluminium profiles with high weather and security performance with PAS24 certification.
The modern and minimal design windows had 30mm glass thickness included 16mm argon gas thickness to give the correct insulation ensuring that the internal living area can be protected from the harshest of weather conditions.
All of these bespoke architectural glazing elements were manufactured with low iron, toughened glass with solar control coating to reduce overheating during warm seasons.
