The Wall House contemporary glass house design

Set in the heart of rural Warwickshire, The Wall Housealso known as Woodlands, is a prime example of contemporary glass house design, where heritage architecture is reinterpreted through modern materials and refined engineering. Designed by Nexus Architects and built by Hyatt Construction, this striking 4-bedroom residence is centred around a remarkable listed garden wall, making the project not only technically ambitious but also architecturally sensitive.

The Wall House is currently listed for sale on Zoopla, offering a rare opportunity to own a truly unique example of contemporary glass house design. This remarkable property combines heritage architecture with state-of-the-art glazing systems, designed and installed by IQ Glass to deliver a home that is both elegant and technically advanced.

IQ Glass was brought in to deliver a bespoke glazing package that would bring the architect’s vision to life while carefully integrating with the site’s historic fabric. The result is a home that feels both rooted in its setting and boldly contemporary, defined by the intelligent use of glass, structure, and light.

A central design challenge was how to highlight, rather than hide, the listed wall. Instead of building around or away from it, the architects chose to make it a defining feature of the contemporary glass house design. Our solution was to install structural glazing directly connected to this wall, transforming it into a focal point from both inside and out. The glazing allows uninterrupted views of the historic masonry, preserving its texture and character while letting it breathe in a modern context.

One of the most technically sophisticated features of this contemporary glass house design is found at the front elevation. To increase natural light in this less exposed area, IQ Glass engineered a glass roof that seamlessly connects into a glass link corridor, running the full width of the front façade. This link stretches to an impressive 21,510mm from end to end, was constructed using 10 individual structural glass panels with a narrow projection of just 600mm. Above, the glass roof comprised 7 further structural glazing sections, all supported by 10mm glass beams. This glass-on-glass configuration eliminates the need for metal framing and ensures the maximum amount of light enters the home, turning what could have been a dim entry into an architectural statement of openness and clarity.

To the rear of the property, the house opens out through large, unobstructed glazed apertures. Two expansive 3-pane minimal windows sliding door systems, each over 3000mm wide by 2500mm tall, offer uninterrupted views of the landscaped gardens. These systems are double glazed with ultra-slim 22mm sightlines, offering the performance expected of modern architectural glazing while preserving the crisp, minimal aesthetic. Complementing these are five 3-pane Sieger Casement Windows, which provide balanced daylighting and ventilation while maintaining a consistent design language.

This complex and historically sensitive project is a showcase of what can be achieved when contemporary glass house design is matched with technical expertise and architectural vision. The integration of advanced glazing with listed structures is no small feat; it requires precision, respect for context, and close collaboration across the design and build team.

In total, over 40 glass units were installed across the property. Every piece was precisely fabricated and assembled to exacting tolerances, ensuring seamless integration with the surrounding architecture, particularly in areas where modern glazing intersected with traditional stone and listed structures.
